    Vintage Hi-Fi Magazine Articles

I thought I'd start a thread to post articles from some vintage High Fidelity magazines which I have. These will all be from magazines which are long out of print to avoid the wrath of the copyright Nazis. I will post more articles in the future, depending on interest. To start out, below is...

    Steam Powered Turntable (!)

I think the cool setup would be using a steam engine to generate the electricity which runs the turntable. That way there would be no performance hit. :banana-dance:

Is there an optimal distance for the spacing of speakers?

Re: Is there an optimal distance for the spacing of speakers The guy in that picture is not sitting in the right spot.

Wow.....After seeing the "competition", I think I'm gonna give up making videos. :laughing-lettersrofl:

    Does LED have glare issues?

The monitors which can have local dimming are those which use a large array of hundreds of LEDs behind the LCD screen (the array is as large as the LCD). The very thin monitors use edge lighting, and these cannot be locally dimmed because there are only LEDs around the perimeter of the LCD...

    Tube amplifier meets Italian style

Well, actually you do have kids, but they tend to look like your avitar. :teasing-tease:

    Stereophonic sound:

Kind of gives perspective to read about the old stuff. I like to study the history of audio, and have found that there are really very few "new" things in audio which weren't known about long, long ago. In the 1930s, AM radio was tested which had bandwidth to 15kHz. WW II really put the lid on a...

    Tube amplifier meets Italian style

Its well known that stainless steel tube amps don't sound good. I prefer bronze myself, but I've heard that depleted uranium sounds pretty good too. :banana-rock:

    Marantz mono block amps, price?

Note to self: whenever I sell something on eBay, do not use a packing blanket as a photo backdrop. :scared-eek: Seriously though, I don't know what they are worth but I think there's an audio bluebook somewhere on the web. Sorry I don't know anything more specific.

    Tube Amp Choices

While I like the looks and build quality of McIntosh tube amps, I don't like their sound quality at all.

    Denon AH-D5000 Mod

I wasn't referring only to the pins, but the internals too.

Those tubes don't look all that well made.

    Move Over, TrueRTA

Native screen capture would be nice, but its not worthwhile enough for me to go the Apple route. I considered an iPhone, but I just can't stomach the whole Apple thing as they are nowadays, with their tight control of their customers. I used a Mac Plus in the late 1980s for music composition...

Yes, it would be nice to have a gain control.

I'll post those recommendations to the software maker. :teasing-tease:

    Move Over, TrueRTA

On a lark, I downloaded the RTA Pro audio analyzer program for my Droid X. Surprise, the Droid makes a pretty good RTA! I guess I shouldn't be too surprised with the microphone quality in the Droid since condenser mike capsules are getting very good for very cheap: after all, the capsule in my...

    My dream speakers!

When I was a kid, 8 tracks were already the norm, but I did see several people who had record players in their cars. These were made for car use, and I think they may have only played 45 RPM records, but maybe albums also. At any rate, I'd sure as hell not want to play any of my premium 200...

    My dream speakers!

Dynamic balance was pretty much a useless system but I imagine the marketing departments had fun.

    My dream speakers!

If the spring mechanism is working correctly, it shouldn't matter whether gravity or a spring was holding the arm down. The problem was that the springs aged over time and the arms in general were unreliable over the long term.
