Any new music I should be listening too?

Since I'm in the midst of tax season, i'm listening to a LOT of music at work, but I'm kind of bored with the stuff I have saved. Anything new that I should listen to?

Stuff I like that I think would be a good indication of what I'm looking for - and if you can find a common thread among these, i'd love to know what it is. Other than they're all awesome of course.
  • Flogging Molly
  • Miles Davis
  • Jack White
  • Syriana
  • Jack Johnson
  • Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats
  • The Queers
  • Portugal the Man
  • Beats Antique
  • Cage the Elephant
  • Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer
  • Die Antwoord
  • Gogol Bordello
  • Pink Martini
  • TV on the Radio
  • Reel Big FIsh

Halestorm?

Radiohead?

XTC?

The New Pornographers?

Death Cab for Cutie?

Halestorm? Gonna try it right now

Radiohead? Just not my thing. I should like it, but.

XTC? I know some, but not a ton. Maybe try listening

The New Pornographers? I'll have to try their later stuff -- i didn't remember that they reformed

Death Cab for Cutie? Already in my mix

Classical music? That and Opera both get played with some regularity

Not sure what you mean by new. Artists up and coming, established, new to you? I thrive on classics. Let me explain.
50s and 60s jazz. Coltrane, Miles, Monk, Ella, Lena, Getz and the list goes on. I grew up in the 50s 60s early 70s. So Motown and before, Woodstock era, Beatles, Stones, Airplane, Hendrix. I enjoy classical too. Won't bore with the list.
The list you shared I have to admit I have no idea who these artists are. Then again I'm 65. So I get a pass.

This would be new to me, but it often means currently new to the world.
All of the artists you mentioned above, I've listened to before. I've always been on the look for the next big thing (for me), so i cylce through artists/genres more than the norm I think.
My "favorite" band changes pretty often save lately. I've been stuck on Flogging Molly for a while. I made a list once of my "favorite" bands at some time or another. I think I hit 25 or so.
And I'm 50, so I'm feeling like I might be a little fickle..

I'm open to new. Just asked Alexa for Flogging Molly. I'm 30 seconds in and liking early in but the Celtic style has always appealed to me but limited. Getting a little Green Day with Don't Shut em Down. Going to sample some of the others you listed. Always look to expand, thanks

Went through 4 songs, they lost me
On to Jack White, so far not optimistic 2 songs in.

You know, what's scary is that with the exception of maybe a couple, ALL the above bands (I assume they're bands) I've never hear of. On the other hand I bet there's nobody here who can name Lawrence Welk's first piano player.

No but I remember watching Lawrence Welk. I think it was Saturday night. My parents were always out, and my sitter Mrs. Cassidy would watch. I remember bubbles and music I couldn't relate to. No idea on piano player.

I’ll add The National, The Avett Brothers, and Brand New’s latest album, Science Fiction.

Check out "Thank You Scientist" for some interesting musicianship and music.

oh! i know one album,

natalie merchant, tibgerlily.

which brings me to one question, if yoiu HAD to listen to one album, and listen to that one alone, which one would it be?

They hit both the punk and irish folk pretty hard... which is why they've been on top for so long for me. But based on your post, not so much for you. If you liked the Celtic angle, but not the punk/rock so much, try Gaelic Storm if you haven't already. I think that would be more up your alley based on your comments. Others on my list up top you might try are:
  • Syriana
  • Jack Johnson
  • Beats Antique
  • Pink Martini

I'm assuming you like it a little on the softer side. All four of these artists are TOTALLY different from each other, but I like all of them. Another one to try that's not on the list (i'm listening to right now) is Laika and Cosmonauts. All instrumental (generally) surf music.

true on that one... but i wouldn't be surprised if i saw him on tv. My grandparents watched him all the time. ;)

As for knowing or not knowing, some of those are a little obscure, but there are several I would have thought you'd have heard of and appreciated. My impression is that your musical tastes tend towards the classical/opera/old jazz. If you haven't tried them yet, i'd recommend Pink Martini. You might not like it, but I'd say that's the most likely on the list.

And Syriana was someone I picked up from your recommendation. I like them a lot.

Alt-J, AWOLNation, Cold War Kids, Vance Joy

Alt J and AWOLNation -- love Alt J and i've dabbled with AWOLNation. Their two big songs I like a lot, but i haven't hit the rest of their stuff.

All of the others I HAVEN'T hear of and will be sampling today. Thanks!

are you up for jazz? well, MY kinda jazz, if not i'll shut up.

I don't know what your kind of Jazz, but I like Miles Davis and Coltrane. Jazz is something I didn't care for a long time but started getting into in the last 5 or so years, so i don't know a ton about the non-obvious artists (like Davis and Coltrane) I should check out. I can say that i don't care for the newer stuff (by that I mean, stuff in the 90s). Dated a girl who was totally into that stuff -- it was (bad) elevator music to me. I might hv a different opinion now, but I don't think so.
