So... it's finally about time to replace my HT display which - I kid you not - is from ~2010, a 45" Toshiba. (I've said many times I'm not that into video tech...) I'm looking for at most a 55", in a room without very controlled lighting, and where I sit maybe 7-8' from the screen. I don't want to spend more than $1000. This will be used roughly 60-40 for video games and streaming TV (Netflix, Disney+). I barely ever watch discs anymore, mainly blu-ray concert videos. My pre/pro (Marantz 70s) can do 4k, but my disc player is only regular blu-ray. I have a roku for streaming (ancient roku 3) but I guess that's not really needed with newer TVs?

Any particular recommendations on deals right now?

Wow looking at BestBuy I guess $1k is at the upper end for a 55"... also I don't even know what the difference is between OLED and QLED.

Thanks yeah saw that, looking at 55, LG C5 vs B5… not a huge price difference (plus I have some discount at bestbuy) supposedly C5 is a lot brighter, which may be better for my room

I'm off to BestBuy to look at some of these in person, I'm getting lost in online reviews/stats. Of course, lighting there is even worse than my house....

OK, I’m springing for the C5, $1050 at Best Buy, noticeably better than B5 at least from a quick look. Hopefully this will do me for another 15 years lol

Now I gotta figure out how to hook this into my system, in particular how to get sound out from the TV if I use that as the streaming device, probably optical?

I'm late...but i would have recommended a TCL TV and would have come in way under budget.
And then add a Roku Ultra or something similar.
The Roku interface is my favorite

Yeah, still undecided if I’ll get a new Roku or what… But I got some money for Christmas so I figured I’d opt for the nicer set under the assumption It’ll last a while. Merry post-Christmas to me, yay.

Sounds like you have it sorted out, but the last several sets I’ve purchased from Costco due to the value and somewhat limited selection making the decision easier. Last purchase was an 86” Sony for around $2k.

What model did you get?

I used a Roku for years but once trying an Apple TV, no going back. Love the feature in movies (doesn't usually work on series/news/sports) where, if I didn't understand a bit of dialog, just hit the Siri button on the remote and ask, "What did he/she say?" (this happens a lot with my tinnitus) and it backs up 15 seconds, turns on Subtitles, and then plays thru again. Brilliant!

Argh for the life of me, I can't figure out how to get eARC working. I see the volume on the marantz goes up/down with the tv remote (CEC is enabled) but no sound, it's supposed to auto-switch to TV audio... ugh well the picture is nice

Ah fuck I figured it out, I had tv audio input hidden in the marantz config because I never used that before, and forgot I did that, now all good… duh

Ok yeah my GPU is fully capable of maintaining 4k@120Hz, at least wtih Borderlands 4 - and OMG THIS IS AMAZING WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T I DO THIS SOONER?!?!?!
