Are you influenced by TV Advertising?

Doesn't matter. Are we under the impression that companies pay millions of dollars to create and air special commercials during the Super Bowl because they just enjoy wasting money? No, they are expecting to reap a financial benefit- even if it's not a direct one, they are trying to shape our...

Are you influenced by TV Advertising?

I think most people would deny that advertising influences their choices, but let's face it- if that were truly the case, there wouldn't be any advertising. Instead, advertising is a MASSIVE business. Television is based on advertising. Some of the largest internet companies (Google, Facebook...

    Next upgrade?

In the past, Paradigm made a big deal about pretty much their entire product line being timbre-matched to each other. Now, I'm not sure how that would have worked had one taken their cheapest bookshelf and set it alongside one of their Reference Studio units, but I know my (recently replaced)...

    Audiophile's primary argument against CDs

The only real noise I remember hearing from a CD player was when I used a 5 disc carousel changer- those could clunk a little as it picked up or dropped a disc.

    New TV

In my theater, I sit about 12 feet away from the TV. I went from a 57" set in there- it was decent, but I wanted something bigger. I ended up wall mounting the thing (used the AmazonBasics brand articulating mount- it worked really well) instead of trying to fit it on a TV stand. IMO, I wish...

    New TV

I don't blame you for going with the 75 inch over the 82... at some point you just have to say "You know, that's plenty." I'm still very happy with my 65" Q8f QLED... it looks fantastic, especially once it got broken in.

    Next upgrade?

Yeah, I'm with you on the swapping out of the surrounds- that's where I'd probably be looking for the next move.

No, I get it- I'm not saying that stuff doesn't matter- it's that isolating the theater breakers from the rest of the box would make that easier to implement on a circuit-wide basis, not just at the outlet. But you COULD sell a ridiculously over engineered breaker box and other goodies at...

Yeah, a separate "insulated" breaker box that would let you keep the AC power completely separate from all other noisy circuits in the house. On a more serious note- that WOULD allow for something useful, like a panel-mounted surge arrestor, but one could doll that sucker up for SERIOUS bucks...

Even better. Get some cheap Romex cable, wrap it in nylon, and sell THAT. Because what's the point in expensive power cables if the electrical power going to the outlet into which those cables are plugged are using the same crappy electrical cable you used for the rest of your hovel? Combine...

    Netflix raises prices, again.

I have been on the fence about keeping Netflix. We don't watch it much... I know their original content is generally decent quality, but that's not what interests us about the service. This increase will likely push me off the fence. We do plan to subscribe to Disney's service (assuming it's as...

    Some senior moment questions

Yes, you can use Atmos without overhead speakers- I did with my Marantz 6012 before getting the new speaker setup. Like with any other relatively modern AVR, it figures out what speakers you do or don't have and then it will adjust accordingly.

That's sweet. There's a money-making opportunity for her- artistic acoustic panels.

Thieves who Steal your ring video doorbell to the Tube Top Bandit

It would be interesting. I would suspect that while it's not often a decent priority, it may well be that such folks are already known to the police department and as such would be fairly low hanging fruit for the cops to nab. They may not run around trying to solve it, but even if the news will...

Thieves who Steal your ring video doorbell to the Tube Top Bandit

LOL... methheads. A Ring or similar device is only as useful as any other video surveillance. If you're dealing with someone who doesn't want to get caught, they'll bail once they realize they're being recorded. If you're dealing with someone who doesn't care or is just a moron, well, now the...

    New and “affordable” headphones

Yeah, Grados can be uncomfortable- I don't like the earpieces, but there's aftermarket ones available. Years ago when I gave them a listen I thought they sounded good. I've always been a fan of Sennheiser, but I can't really vouch for their current models.

    New and “affordable” headphones

Is he thinking wired? Wireless? Noise canceling? For critical listening/exercise/just so he can get a moment's rest without those kids making noise and the wife nagging nagging nagging YES DEAR I SAID I'LL GET THE TRASH? Ahem. Got a little carried away there.

Akula continues to upgrade his home theater

Yeah, it seems like the Monitor series has historically held down a really good spot on the price/performance ratio. There's better, but the law of diminishing returns will bite down hard.

Akula continues to upgrade his home theater

Yes, it was Sound Room. They’re decent folks, but I still miss Hi Fi Fo Fum. The previous setup was all Paradigm too- Mini Monitors and a CC-370 up front, with Titans in the rear (all v3 vintage- think I bought them in 2002 or thereabouts).

Akula continues to upgrade his home theater

Yeah, there's definitely better out there. But I had a hard limit at about $3000... and I really didn't want to go that high. This kit is just a shade over 2K with tax included... like I said, the Premiers were a possibility, but I didn't feel like dropping another thousand bucks just for...
