    My dream speakers!

Turntables which can do that have what is known as dynamic balancing, which is essentially a spring holding the tonearm and cartridge against the disk instead of gravity. The AR turntable was not one of these, but other turntables like some made by Dual were.

    Lost in Space

Weird but true, I have an upcoming portrait session with the woman (Marta Kristen) who played the blonde older daughter in Lost in Space. Never watched the show myself; always thought it was stupid.

    Trinaural Processor: Three speaker stereo

The only ones I know about personally are classical recordings made by RCA and Mercury Living Presence, but there are probably more out there. About the only way you might know if the original 3 track master is used is possibly if only the L,C,R tracks are used and there is nothing on the...

    Trinaural Processor: Three speaker stereo

Extracting a center channel from stereo sources is something I have done quite a bit of. The majority of stereo music songs in feature films, music which is not original score composed specifically for the film, is matrixed to three channels so that all three front stage speakers are...

    Return of Stereo and Hi-fi?

Listening to stereo music as a sole form of entertainment has indeed declined drastically over the years. More people "listen" to stereo, whether through a home system or through an iPod, smart phone or whatever, but it is overwhelmingly done as background while they are doing something else...

    Denon AH-D5000 Mod

Input tubes have more influence on sound quality beause they always have voltage gain, where output tubes are always run at unity voltage gain.

    Remastered vinyl vs original CD?

While I prefer vinyl for a lot of material, vinyl is not for everyone because of the investment in equipment and upkeep. Only you can make that determination.

    Remastered vinyl vs original CD?

The source of the master and the abilities of the person doing the transfer have much more impact than the delivery format.

    Return of Stereo and Hi-fi?

I might try to ckeck out the show in Orange County. However the people in the LA and OC Audio society are the types who believe in designer power cords.... :laughing-rolling:

    Denon AH-D5000 Mod

Short answer, yes. The cathode's emission changes as the tube ages, and that will change the transfer characteristics of the tube. Eventually the cathode completely looses its ability to emit electrons.

    Denon AH-D5000 Mod

This might of might not be known by most people, but the great old brands of tubes like Amperex, Tung-Sol, Gold Lion, RCA, GE, Ken-Rad etc ceased to be the original factories which made these tubes in the past. Some of these brand names have been purchased by companies completely disconnected...

    Denon AH-D5000 Mod

Tubes, being an elecctro-mechanical type of device, will have small differences in performance between brands simply because of the small differences in their internal structure. While these differences are certainly measurable, they are not enough for me to go through the hassle of tube rolling.

How to build amp measurement gear?

I can't lay down a blanket statement about audibility, but what I've been harping on for years is the importance of how harmonics which go well beyond the 5th at any amplitude, are going to make an amp sound worse than one which doesn't have distortion harmonics which reach beyond the 5th. In...

How to build amp measurement gear?

The software and computer should have little to do with it. Its really more about the audio interface. Your SET just doesn't have as clean a distortion spectra. BTW: I was using an M-Audio interface (probably similar to yours) for that measurement.

    Remastered vinyl vs original CD?

Don't buy used vinyl, no matter how perfect a condition they say it is in unless you're not particular.

    That must get expensive.

Ever pushed your speakers this hard?

As part of my work at both Altec Lansing and ATI, I pushed probably hundreds of speakers until they either popped out of their magnetic gap and froze, rubbed their voicecoil until it shorted (because the suspension elements ceased to allow strict piston action), or until the cone/voicecoil...

    THX Ultra2 Plus certification

If a component is THX certified, it means (A) that it meets certain minimum standards that THX thinks is important (I don't think some of them are that important), and (B) the manufacturer paid THX a license fee. Many manufacturers' products would meet THX specs, but simply don't want to pay...

    Amplifier Differences

Transistor amplifiers tend to be more similar than different. Differential designs are worse, distortion spectra-wise than amps which only have push-pull output stages. The physical arrangement of the amplifier has little to do with how it performs; the electronic differences are the ones that...

How to build amp measurement gear?

Dirty power from the USB jack would not cause harmonic distortion components exactly related to the 1kHz fundamental test frequency as seen in the graph; they would be unrelated in frequency. Various tubes from different manufacturers and build lots can have very different distortion...
