Get Better Sound by Jim Smith

Is that the one that offers a setup method for time aligning certain speaker models?

    Sealed vs Ported

We pretty much don't deal with car audio here so what's communicated on the boards about subwoofers is intended for home use. What might sound awesome in your living room or even a dedicated room can't be replicated in a vehicle with the same equipment (I'll spare you the obvious) and vice versa.

    Oops...I meant line array.

Subwoofer ideas for my future theater

From what I gather a transmission line will give you the best result. It looks to me like the simplest installation too. I'm kind of researching this stuff right along with you really...

    The Alien HT

Yeah from what I understand the x-30 is hard to come by and still sought after for some reason. I'm using it two different ways now. I don't have any HDMI capable equipment so I worked around that for the Hi-def. formats. I'm using the analog outs on the player, with the sub output going...

    The Alien HT

Ha my front ones are even worse. When I put the walls up I thought I could put the cables inside...but then what to do if they needed to be replaced. I don't know how to hide them really.

    The Alien HT

It's 155wpc, very efficient. Then I also don't push anything below 140Hz through it. But I've still had the idea of a separate 2ch amp, monoblocks, or bi-amping rattling around for a long time.

Up front is version 2 of paradigm studio 100's, CC450 center, V1 servo-15 sub with x-30 controller. Paradigm ADP370B surrounds. Sony BDP-S300 using the analog outs to the multichannel in on a Sony STR-DE3000ES. My TV is a 44" LG DLP running 1080i through a Beldin DVI. I have the service...

    The Alien HT

Thanks Heeman...actually it performs way better than it looks. Thankfully! My aim was function over form. The room treatments made a huge difference. I did make an effort in building dimensions too to help prevent standing waves...I used an Eigenmode calculator.

    The Alien HT

Yes. I framed it in, insulated, dry-walled, finished and painted, electrical, ceiling, floor...I did all of it from end to end. It is narrower than I'd like it to be, but the shot with the wide angle lens makes it look more narrow still. It's 13.75 wide by 23.5 long.

    The Alien HT

I'll have to back-track to a couple of years ago to show where I started the build from scratch but for now here is my current rendition. The room is in my basement. This is actually what I was keeping myself busy with the most while Sofi was in the hospital almost 200 miles away and I'd come...

Subwoofer ideas for my future theater

I much appreciate this thread as I had the same question about placement...I suppose having it centrally located would give more room for error but now I know I CAN have one off to the side, near my front corner. As a matter of fact that entire wall is wide open except for my acoustic panels...

Subwoofer ideas for my future theater

Except for having to move it LOL. No problem vacuuming around it and hey, no worries about bad company trying to use it as an end table or seat!

Subwoofer ideas for my future theater

That's what I thought...but actually I think he's stating it in reference to my idea about a non-centered IB placement being more able to be localized due to structure vibration of what it's mounted to. If I'm right he's saying that's not the true culprit of that issue but the lack of THD and...

Subwoofer ideas for my future theater

It's probable because of the asymmetry issue combined with structure...With an IB sub there is always a risk of vibration in the structure...if it were off to one side of course you'd hate it. Of course this isn't as much an issue with cabinet subs since they are more isolated from the...

    Ideal yardstick/reference to setup quality?

Yeah I remember that test! I forget what happened exactly but I remember not being able to play it on what I downloaded it to for some reason...a file association problem or something. I built a dedicated theater in my basement from scratch. I had some beginning photos a couple years ago on...

    Ideal yardstick/reference to setup quality?

Thanks that's what I was wondering. I gotta get some pics uploaded on here worth looking at...last time I tried it got over exposed or whatever plus I'm kinda shy about what I built.

    Ideal yardstick/reference to setup quality?

What I mean is that my sound staging/imaging for 2 channel doesn't differ much any more from full 5.1...hence not a problem but is that a reference to proper to 2 channel setup or is it too diffused?

    Ideal yardstick/reference to setup quality?

I like to listen to music in 2 channel just much as movies in surround in my theater. I have some concert DVD's with 2 channel mixes included. Comparing the mixes though actually leaves only a few differences...in 2 channel gone is the elevated bass of LFE but it's just as enveloping a sound...
