Watching a documentary on PBS right now, 1964. Got quite a chuckle about one snippet from the show; a hyped boxing match between Sonny Liston and some kid named Cassius Clay was coming up, and these four kids from Liverpool just arrived in the US in preparation for their debut on the Ed Sullivan Show. The marketing guys arranged a photo shoot between the Fab Four and Liston, but when Liston saw them he refused to be photo'd with "those sissy boys".
Trying to salvage things, another photo shoot was hastily arranged with Mr. Clay. The Beatles got cold feet, but were pushed up into Clay's gym and locked in a room; I guess they weren't too happy about it. Finally the door opened, and Cassius came in and immediately charmed them, he said, "Let's make some money!" and he led them to the ring for a good photo shoot (pics and video of which I've never seen before, wow!) The Beatles finally left, very happy. Cassius Clay went back to his private room, started getting a massage, and motioned one of the reporters over to him. And he asked,
"Who the hell were those sissy boys?"

:laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:

I was digging for prizes in my cereal box in 1964; it's fun to watch documentaries of history I've lived through, but wasn't really aware of (at least at the time).

This doc was 2 hours, not one. Took a really ugly turn too, but fascinating. Can't say more outside the Political thread… :naughty:

I was 8 I remember that fight because Dad my older Brother watched and I watched what ever older brother was watching. Not by choice but by pecking order.

This must have coincided with the Beatles coming to USA and going on the Ed Sulivan show. We watched that also because Ed Sulivan was not missed around our house. I can still see my Dad shaking his head and saying this is not music its all just 3 cord. The only one talented on that band is the drummer. He also said those kids need a haircut.

Funny Dad being in WWII in the Pacific and staunch Military he seemed to be fond of Ali. He never missed a fight of his. Back then they were on closed circuit at the Theator. A few days or weeks they would come to TV Wide World of Sports usually and we all set there and watched the fight in the Den. I think Dad respected him and his stand and not wavoring.

As for the Beatles he never kept my Sis from collecting there 45s we would play them on on an old Airline suitcase record player. Im sure it had to be airline because we shopped Monkey Ward or Sears pretty exclusively.

I was flipping thru channels and seen that on but settled with Person of Interest
