Al Jazeera buys Al Gore's Current TV

I wonder why Al Gore cannot seem to hit a home run in entertainment?

He'll walk away with $100M (rumored total sale price between $400M and $500M) a failing TV network that nobody watched.

You mean he is a 1 percent-er? Why... he is an evil person then. :x He should be taxed to max, to pay for our national debt.

I heard from a friend of mine in my company's M&A dept that Al insisted the sale be completed and on the books prior to the end of the year when the new higher taxes go into affect.

Ever wonder why your cable bill is so high? It's because cable companies sign stupid contracts. Current TV is being paid between ten and twelve cents per subscriber for by the carriers despite the fact that it only attracts around 40,000 viewers on average. That generates close to $100M in revenue each year for the network. That's $2,500 per viewer.

Quick math problem...

$500,000,00 dollars to purchase a network with an average viewership of 40,000 = $12,500 per viewer. Why would anyone spend that kind of money to reach so few people?

Because they get a ready made network with carrier agreements that will land them in pretty much every American home. They're obviously expecting the 40K viewers to increase... I doubt most of the current viewers will continue to watch, but maybe they'll pick up a few more. Despite Al-Jazeera's reputation for being anti-American (and Glenn Beck's foaming at the mouth over Gore refusing his bid for the network), from what I understand they're actually much more neutral than the American "news" networks.

My point was an they could start a new network for far less money. And they have tried. But the carriers haven't been willing to put them on the air. So the only way they could get on was to buy those stupid contracs. TWC apparently had the sense to have a clause allowing them to void the dealin the event of a change on ownership.
