AVR opinions

Ok peeps..need opinions
I have an older (8yrs?) Harmon Kardon 230, and it seems to be getting a bit tired, shutting off in "protect mode" very often. This happened since we got cable tv last week. We used to watch TV over the air at -40 to -35dB and now we have to turn it up to like -20dB and it shuts off.

I am looking to upgrade to an HDMI receiver. I have klipsch reference 3.1 set up.

I like the balance of the "warm" tone of the HK with the "brighter" Klipsch. I have read that Merantz pairs well with Klipsch also.

These are the two receivers I was contemplating:

We are 95% TV and 5% pandora

opinions? Suggestions?

Thank you very much!!!

I have never bought without listening first

I'd consider the Marantz over the HK based only on my perception of brand quality. To be fair I've never owned either.

Never owned anything by HK but I have owned several Marantz pieces and I have had very good luck with them.

I have also had good luck with accessories4less bought a refurb Marantz AVR and one arrive DOA. They swapped it out easy peasy.

Basically just different input voltage. Each component or source is going to vary a little. With TV, I would imagine every source could be different and possibly substantially different.

Any Ideas on why we have to watch TV at a higher volume since getting cable?

Sometimes cable boxes have their own variable volume. I know that many Motorola boxes have this and I have seen it cause MANY problems. The max volume setting says something like "FIXED" but I can't remember exactly what. I'm also not really sure how you turn it up since the remote's volume control is probably set to work your TV. You may have to do something like press and hold the "Cable" mode button at the top of the remote.

Got it! I'm liking it so far, just need fine tune the set-up. Found an open box at a local mom and pop store for $330, but they cannot locate the microphone to do the speaker set-up.

Bump !
Any update on this slim line Marantz ? Reason I ask 'cause in the near future I need to purchase an A/V receiver & being I'm a Marantz fan.....
