Just read Vince Horiuchi's "Oh My Tech" column in the Salt Lake Tribune. Apparently there's been some sort of disagreement regarding The Lion King and its sequels, between Apple/Amazon and Disney. Disney has pulled digital rights to the movie, so even if you've purchased the digital rights to the movies from iTunes or Amazon, unless you downloaded it you no longer have access. This possibility is outlined in that long, legal thingie on both websites that you have to click "Accept" on, but no one reads.

Mr. Horiuchi has mentioned in his column before that an album he'd purchased before was pulled, and no longer available. I've always been a bit of a luddite and buy physical disks and books, and I think I will probably continue that for the foreseeable future.

This is why I only buy UV movies. UV is backed directly by the studios themselves. I'm not buying a content license from Vudu or Flixter. I am buying it directly from Paramount or 20th Century Fox. That makes it a whole lot less risky.

I only buy DRM-free music downloads and keep a backed up copy on my network.

One of the reasons why I tend to not buy very many "legitimate" eBooks is that they are all heavily DRM laden and remain entirely beholden to the survival of the reseller. I'm generally not down with that.

I think Disney blows monkey chunks for not going with most other studios and joining UV but noooooo they want their own digital licensing and they want you to pay full retail price again for the digital rights to a disc you already bought. Fucking greedy bastards.

I'll just buy the disc and rip it. Fuck their "rights."

The last couple Disney-ish movies I bought (The Muppet Movie and Robin Hood) didn't have downloadable copies via iTunes like the previous ones I'd purchased. Nope, they're "in the cloud" versions from Amazon.

So they're vulnerable to this crap. Good thing I still have the discs, but still, it gives me pause whenever I see "digital copy included" anymore- if I don't know for sure I can download it, I have to assume that "feature" is likely something limited to internet connectivity at least and able to be taken from me at any moment at worst.

Digital Copy always was worthless, due to the insane DRM restrictions and frequently crappy quality. I have always found it preferable to simply rip the disc. I do have at least one movie with a Disney Digital Copy license through Vudu, that license is from Disney, not Walmart.

In general, I think that Disney's digital media policies are pretty shitty for consumers.
