Canadian NRC Speaker Measurements

Even though speaker measurements do not tell the whole story, at least it is better than all hyperbole you get from some manf.

With the cooperation of Canada's National Research Council (NRC), in the year 2000 the SoundStage! Network began measuring and publishing objective measurements of loudspeaker products -- a first for online publications.

The NRC's legacy of producing accurate loudspeaker measurements goes back decades. Literally thousands of speakers have been measured in their facilities since the '70s, and they are one of the few facilities in the world with the resources and expertise to conduct such tests.

The NRC facilities have, of course, been continually upgraded and today it's a state-of-the-art laboratory that includes an anechoic chamber, reference-grade test equipment, experienced staff, and a standardized process that is used consistently for all products. The end result are measurements that we feel are a benchmark for the industry, and useful for anyone wishing to obtain accurate, objective data about loudspeaker products.

While I did not look at every speaker on the list, Revel, YG Acoustics, Dynaudio C4, Magico, PSB, Usher, Focal, all seemed to have pretty smooth FR curves. With the caveat that I not an expert, in reading those charts. While the Zu Cable Druid's Frequency response was pretty scary looking to me.

To the best of my knowledge, NRC is no longer involved in speaker testing. It let go of all of the researchers in this area a couple of years ago and I think the one remaining technical officer has moved on as well. That capability does not show up on NRC's web site.

Jeff (laid off NRC employee - turfed with 31.5 years of service and just 1.5 years shy of retirement - but still glad to be leaving!)

.....don't mean to hijack this thread, but, Jeff....sorry to hear that ! 1.5 yrs till retirement......that sucks.
