I don't think most DSLRs can autofocus when shooting video.

He didn't have it set on autofocus for the stills, either. 1 m focal distance, high ISO/small aperture for max DOF…
 
Cool. Makes me want to go on an African Safari. Of course I am not sure I would ever like to get that close to a pride of lions!!!
