Car Speakers

I'm not sure if this is the right subforum, so please move as necessary...

but my wife and I bought a beater car for her to drive up to San Francisco for her work -- no worries if it gets dinged or scratched or... Anyway, in order to improve the experience as much as I can, I'd like to install some better speakers than what it has. The car (Geo Prizm -- don't ask me, she picked it) supports 4"x4" speakers.

I have zero knowledge of what's even decent out there -- anyone have any recommendations? We're not going crazy, but again, I don't want crap either.

Thanks guys/gals..

For semi-affordable speakers I find that few brands can compete with Infinity for a more hi-fi sound which is pleasing and less likely to cause fatigue at the high levels necessary to listen while driving.

If you want to spend more, Focal, Morel, and Diamond Audio are high on my list.

If I were going to do another car system and I could afford it I would go with Focal

I agree with Focal but probably not in a Geo Prism. But I'm sure anything than the factory will serve you well.

Focal sound ok, not really a fan of them nor would I buy them. I think they get to harsh sounding in the high end. I tend to buy silk dome tweeters sets. They just sound much smoother in the high end.

Just like with home stuff in listen to them.

It is nearly impossible to get good reliability and performance from an audiophile silk dome tweeter in a car, but Morel is pretty good at it. I just set the tweeter on the lowest output setting for car tweeters anyway.

A good equipment can make a huge improvement in the treble performance. The "equal loudness curve" aspect of audio levels is much more important in car audio where you will he forced to raise and cut the listening levels by huge amounts during one ride. I tune my car audio for the most ideal balanced sound AR higher levels while driving g, then deal with the fact it will be duller and less exciting at lower levels.

I had a set of Boston's from 1995 they were silk dome. I just recently had my 5 1/4 Driver come apart. I really enjoyed them.

The one comp I entered they scored very well.

It can be a pain getting a pair of speakers to sound good in. a car.

Happy shopping.
