Computer Speakers

So I swear we had a topic on this within the last year, but I can't find it for the life of me.. but I'd like to get some cheap computer speakers. Eventually, I'll get some bookshelf speakers for my office, but for right now, I'd like something that doesn't make my teeth hurt listening to them. Anyone buy an inexpensive set recently that they liked?
 
Hope this isn't spam but I have a spare set of Audioengine A2's I'm ready to get rid of. Don't know what "cheap" means to you but I'd take $100 + shipping. They sound really great. My other set has been paired with my desktop computer for about 4 years now and I still love them. Even if you don't want mine I highly recommend these.
 
I was looking for something semi-disposable since my plan is to eventually (hopefully sooner than later) get some small bookshelves for my office as some point.. if I wasn't going that route, I'd be all over those Audioengines..
 
OK, cool. These are the only compact powered computer speakers I've ever really liked so I don't have any other recommendations but I'm sure someone else will.

Thinking out of the box: perhaps a decent cheap set of headphones or IEMS could work until you get your bookshelf set? You generally get a lot more bang for the buck in this realm.

And one more unwanted suggestion: fantastic sounding bookshelf speakers can be had for very reasonable prices these days. I just got a set of the famed PSB Alpha B1's for my bedroom and was very surprised at the level of refinement for a mere $250 new. And these are not the only high performers at this price point. Just in case you think you need to save up $1k or something for a nice set of office bookshelf speakers.

or even cheaper: over Thanksgiving i plugged in an old set of Celestion 3's that my Stepmom had lying around since the 90's. i couldn't believe how rich, natural and full frequency these dusty ugly little things sounded! i had never heard of them so i googled and found out they were the budget darling of the 90's. and they can be found for $50 on ebay - now that's a disposable price! actually you'll probably want to keep them.
 
Since your building up to a bookshelf system in the office anyway... Why buy "computer speakers" that you'll just toss out soon. If $60 is within the budget may I suggest starting with the little Dayton DTA-100a class T amp connected to your computer's audio out and any old passive speakers you may laying around.
 
Good advice.

One advantage of "computer" speakers might be space - and price if you buy used. Not that I'm advocating them per se, but simply because they are typical of what you might do...

... in one bedroom I've got an old PC sitting on a computer desk, and attached to it is a Yamaha YST-MS25 (two small speakers and a "sub") that I bought new in 1998 for $150. No deal there - but it fit the bill at the time. Thing is it sounds pretty darn good AND I've seen them sell used for $30. At that price it would be a great deal.

In my office I'm currently using an old pair of Altec Lansing ACS43 computer speakers that I bought years ago for $5 at a yard sale, and Yamaha YST-SW105 sub that I paid $15 for used. The combo works great together.

In both cases the sub fits well out of sight under the desk, and the sats take up little or no room, either on the desktop, or shelf above.

And they both do a very good job of giving me sound while working at my computer.

was going to toss em after i get my stuff together at the other house, replace em with my older cambridge soundworks speakers set...

its still in the office.

works for whats needed, good decent sound from a simple phone or tablet, even used a smaller dac but at the moment my dac is shitting on me with humming and interference.

1. its under your 60 dollar budget
2. totally disposable ifyou choose to
3. not a bad investment and decent enough sound.
