Dish and Hopper

We switched to Dish here awhile back, not my choice, and it has its plus and minuses compared to DirecTV. I like that we can start a show in one room and finish in another with the hoppers, but the problem is, Danny cannot understand that when he deletes a show from the hopper upstairs, it deletes it downstairs, and he doesn't like our stuff cluttering up his dvr list. Thankfully, you have 48 hours to undelete something, so we've caught most everything he has deleted.

I've looked in the setup menu's but can't find any type of control to keep this from happening. Anybody familiar with Dish, know how to block him from deleting certain shows?

Well since I don't want to go to jail for child abuse, I'll have to figure something else out. lol I don't know whether it's the autism or the Down's, but he does not like having to scroll through so many other programs. I guess I could set him up with his own folder, but it would be really nice if I could keep him from deleting my programs. Just about lost 3 episodes of The Americans because of him.

Ah, didn't know we were talking about a young one with developmental differences.

My bad. I apologize.

Dish does say how you can view deleted recordings:

Dunno if that will let you watch the episodes he deleted though. The Americans seems to be on Amazon Instant Video (only season 1 is included with Prime right now), and it's a good show, so pity you're missing the parts where they become double agents and help disable Moscow's communications with the KGB agents in the US. (Or did they?... I'm a bad man...)

And this may be how to protect them... to unprotect them you apparently need a password, so you may want to make sure one is set up (one he doesn't know lest he just go ahead and delete them).

I don't know if any DVR allows multiple user accounts (so he'd only see his own recordings).

I think that last link was just what I was looking for Akula. I have parental controls in place, so it should just be a matter of enabling that on the recordings or shows that I want to keep. That is one of the nice things about Dish over DirecTV, you can restore deleted recordings within 48 hours of the deletion. And no worries about the hammer joke. After undoing the deletes for the umpteenth time, I am at my wits end, and the next step was to take the tv out of the loft.

Why not set him up with his own folder? I have Hopper but live alone, so I have limited experience with more than one folder, but from what little I've played with it, I'd think its your ideal solution.

Hopefully the protect it box will now keep them from being deleted without entering a passcode first, but I like the idea about folders. Will work on getting that all set up this weekend.
