Emotiva XMC-1 Pre/Pro with Dirac Live Full

I have been reading about MiniDSP and Dirac Live on another board, and this pre/pro made me think about it as an option for room correction. For those of us who are less technically inclined, I know it would be more limited in scope than what is possible with FIR filters and a custom MiniDSP setup. However I would like to know how far it could take you in comparison, maybe 80-90% or less?

Also can you do something like outside speaker correction with the Dirac Live Full? This option would seem to solve the problem of using DSP room correction with home theatre/multi channel audio?

Of course I could just buy a DEQX, but even used ones are kind of expensive.

"The XMC-1 redefines everything you know about affordable home theater. With a true balanced audiophile signal path, high-performance HDMI video switching that supports up to 4k/60Hz, and Dirac Live for Emotiva™ room correction, this made-in-the-USA masterpiece offers audio performance and sound quality that competes with the best analog preamps, combined with video performance and features that rival home theater preamp/processors costing up to ten times as much."

Yes! Go beyond the capabilities of the included Dirac LE with Dirac Full. Create custom target curves, adjust frequency ranges for correction, create and rearrange speaker groups-you have ultimate room-correction power with Dirac Full. Please note that both Dirac LE and Dirac Full licenses are not transferrable, and that Dirac Full sales are final."

I came dangerously close to buying an Emotiva a few years ago. I cancelled the preorder when the first few product runs were extremely buggy and unreliable. And their update process was painfully complicated and unreliable. Since then Ive been leery about depending on them for a such a complicated and critical piece of my setup.

EQ solves one issue, frequency response aberrations. It cannot reduce echo or reverb. It cannot remove standing waves. It cannot solve group delay or other phase issues. And it will never clean up distortion created by your speakers.

But, EQ can generally solve issues with the tone of your speakers. Of course, buying speakers with a tone yo already like would be smarter.

I have a bit more than passing familiarity with Dirac and related schemes, and I can only echo what Flint said - it is NOT a silver bullet. The problems with acoustics like ringing, echo and other problems are going to still be there. The frequency response may be "flatter" but the problems which made the frequency response "not flat" in the first place are still there, and will still influence the sound.

Doing it the right way, take care of the acoustic problems first, then you do the last bit of tweaking with the EQ. but honestly, If you have sorted out all of the room problems, I think you will find that any EQ is essentially unnecessary.

Not as glamorous as buying a shiny new piece of gear, but them's the fundamentals......
