Flying Colors

PRETTY HAPPY.........
Famous
I was watching the FLYING COLORS blu ray Concert and something didn't quite sound right in the DTS -MASTER 5.1.

So I got up off my lazy ass and wouldn't you know...............nothing coming from the Center Speaker. I confirmed that the system is working correctly.

Can someone with this BR confirm that there is a Center Channel on the audio track and let me know......

Could I have a defective BR????

Keith, I don't have that disc but I know of a way you can check to see what's going on. On the front of your receiver/pre-pro, you should see a set of lights that indicate which channels are active. Typically, these are squares with letters inside them which correspond to the channel (L for Left, C for Center, etc.). If the square AND letter are let that means that the unit is receiving data for that channel. If just the square is lit, that means that the channel is being output to but the sound is being matrixed (ie, made up - such as using a DSP program like DPL).

So, in your case I have my suspicions that the center channel won't have anything lit. I wonder if this disc is in "4.1" or "4.0", for true quadrophinic sound.

In my case, with the 885, playing the Flying Colors BD, the 'C' is on but the square around it is not - because I don't have a center channel speaker currently set up. I own one, but space is limited, especially with separate amp and crossover needed for my active system, and I'm happy with a phantom center. Some music surround mixes don't tend to use the center channel anyway, I think (e.g. Waldrep/AIX). But the sound is fine, from what I can tell. Are you missing vocals or something?

Although, I also tried a DTS 7.1 BD (How To Train Your Dragon 2), and while the display says it's getting 7.1, the "SBL" and "SBR" letters are *not* lit, only the other six (including the LFE). Dunno why.

Have you tried other concerts/movies to check to make sure your center is working?

So I listened to the first couple of songs on this blu-ray. While I don't think there's anything obviously wrong, the mix is a little ... odd. In particular the vocals to me sound like they're about halfway to the right side of the soundstage, rather than being centered. The right is a little crowded actually, with drums being very definitely on the right, along some of the guitars and bass and keys, though sometimes Steve's guitar does seem to be coming more from the left or center. Honestly it's not the best mix I've heard, now that I'm paying careful attention to it. It does maybe have a bit more of a live sound where at a concert the stereo is not so distinct, maybe that's the producer's intention? It's not that there are things that can't be heard, it's just they're not quite as distinct as they could be, I think.

Now a certain other blues-guitarist-who-shall-be-nameless's concert vids don't have that problem. ;) (well, the newer ones anyway...) But his are definitely (re)mixed in a way that you probably wouldn't get live.

Gotta say, the music of Flying Colors does a lot more for me than Transatlantic, despite two band members in common. Guess it's just a personal resonance thing, because I've been listening to Transatlantic and they're definitely good, just doesn't move me the same way.

I returned the Flying Colors BR quite a while ago, and there was nothing coming from the Center Speaker and I do recall the Pre/Pro showing the Center, and it did sound pretty bad. I have not had this problem with any other BR's.

Paul I remember watching this with you at John's GTG last Spring and neither of us mentioned the audio track lacking or being bad, and I am not sure how much Bourbon we had prior to the concert........... :eek:bscene-drinkingcheers:

Been waiting for this for a while... so time to cut out of work early, break out the pulled pork followed by the fancy bourbon (Hillrock) and turn it WAY UP!

Really fantastic concert. Ok I'm hardly unbiased, as this is probably my very favorite prog rock band, and way up there with my top favorite bands of any genre. These guys are incredible musicians, both in performance and composition. Their music really resonates with me, and I love both their albums.

The SQ on this is terrific, with two separate mixes (both in DTS-HD), one "front row" where the mix is a little drier with fairly extreme stereo separation of all the instruments; another "FOH" mix which is as if you're further back in the center of the audience, with a more blended band sound and a little more audience sound surrounding you. They're both good; my first listen was with the front-row mix. Very good, and Heeman will be happy to know that Steve Morse's guitar was really prominent. Occasionally Portnoy's drums lacked a little distinctness for my personal taste. But still overall the sound was very very good, and I think the extra effort they put into the two very different mixes is a nice touch.

The PQ is good - 4/5. I dock one because the lighting isn't so great, they're often either overexposed and saturated, or nearly in the dark. But as far as different POVs and close-ups of all the players, the video is just fine.

As far as songs, they did all but one of the tracks from their second album (which I love love LOVE), and maybe half or so of their first (which I love almost as much). Only one song this time, of McPherson's, that's not by Flying Colors as a group.

Anyway, this is highly recommended if you're a fan, or at all into contemporary prog rock.

FYI I'm moving this thread to the Music section... (used to be in the blu-ray subsection)
