Who?
Harold Lloyd. One of America's greatest film comedians - of all time. That's who.
Because he controlled and basically locked-up almost every copy of every one of his movies for decades and decades, his name pretty much disappeared from the film conscience. After his death some poorly edited (and sounded) copies were issued but it was only later that his works were given the restoration (and soundtracks) that he intended. It is those versions that TCM broadcasts.
So, starting at 8pm on May 23rd (until 6am the next day), set your PVRs to record four of his features (Safety Last, The Freshman, Kid Brother, and Hot Water) and over a dozen terrific shorts (many of which the TCM Guide calls "rare" which is not an understatement given that there are a dozen that, in my 30 years of film collecting, I have never seen!).
Chaplin, Keaton AND Lloyd - love them all. But for my money, Lloyd's genius takes all.
