HDMI Is Going HDR

HDMI just released Version 2.0a.

"SUNNYVALE, Calif., - April 8, 2015 – HDMI Forum, Inc., a non-profit, mutual benefit corporation, today announced the completion and release of Version 2.0a of the HDMI® Specification. It is available to current HDMI 2.0 Adopters via the HDMI Adopter Extranet.

The specification has been updated to enable transmission of HDR formats, which provide enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image. The HDR-related updates include references to CEA-861.3, CEA’s recently published update of HDR Static Metadata Extensions.

“We recognized that HDR would be a critical feature as the industry evolves. Our support for HDR enables our 800+ HDMI 2.0 Adopters to develop market-leading products that include HDR and will maintain interoperability across the entire HDMI ecosystem,” said Robert Blanchard, President of the HDMI Forum, Inc. “Along with the publication of the CEA extensions, the HDMI Forum continues to update the HDMI Specification and remain closely aligned with leading CE standards organizations.”

“By adding HDR, the HDMI Specification continues its history of supporting the latest formats and technologies planned for Hollywood content,” said Arnold Brown, Chairman of the HDMI Forum, Inc. Board of Directors

I have no way of knowing how Hollywood will implement HDR in its filmmaking but just for shits and giggles, I grabbed what I thought was an appropriate image (both light and dark areas in a given scene) from the web...

...and then gave it a quick 'HDR' treatment just using a preset.

Personally, I'm anxious to see an HDR movie (though I'm not looking forward to having to replace three more components).

I pray to God that your example is NOT what we end up with.

I'm certain your prayers will be answered because I'm equally certain Hollywood will spend more than the 6 seconds I spent on that image.

I imagine they'll use it to set the dynamic range on the fly during production.

Awesome I'll be able to see the scabies she has when watching porn now. HD so clear you can see the disappointment in her parents thru her eyes.

Except that YOU probably won't be able to because you're streaming compressed HD from Vudu! :)

Would be nice. You think they'll just convert all HDX to UHD just because they are so generous. Bwahahaha

I'll be happy if I can upgrade for $2/each, though I think my future lies with Kaleidescape.

I'm only at around 760 so far, but I do not have multiple contributors and have not started to leverage the public library yet. If things with Kaleidescape go the way I hope, it will be possible to get every movie on Vudu on Kaleidescape via UV or DMA. At that point, I will likely make the jump and buy a bunch of gear to store local Blu-Ray quality copies of at least a big subset of my library. This is another reason why I really need to get off of optical discs. I still buy a few here and there, but they clearly do not move the ball forward for my long-term game plan.

Tom what's sad is I hardly watch any movies. Just no time. I buy the movies more for my family members to enjoy.
