Ok, so I am nowhere near a rock star, but I got on stage and played live last night for the first time and I have to say it was even cooler than I thouhgt it would be.
I have been going to an open mike night on thursdays at a local place. It is hosted by a different band every week (4 bands rotate). Last night I went and the wifey wanted to go too, which was a little weird cuz she hates the kind off music (usually harder rock) they play. But I know most of the guys in the different bands and I am pretty good friends with a lot of them
We were hanging out and it was getting late, it had been a weird kind of comical night anyway, and on their last break the guys were laughing that they didn't want to play anymore cuz the bass player, who is a buddy of mine, was bein moody. So, I told them if they did Whole Lotta Love by Zeppelin that I would play bass.
I wanted to do that song cuz it is the only song I can really play all the way through and not wreck. Plus, the guys that were playing last night all do a phenomenal job on that song. The guitar play is fantastic and so is the drummer. One of my LONG TIME friends is the other guitar player and sings most of the songs.
They called me up and introduced me and told every one they werre popping my cherry. I wasn't really all that nervous cuz there were also a BUNCH of friends in the audience so I felt pretty comfortable.
My buddy Rob hands me his Rickenbacker :happy-smileygiantred: and shows me the volume knob. I noodle just a bit with the volume down and they all look at me like they are waiting for me. Rob jumps back up on the stage and grabs the volume knob and says "turn it up ALL THE WAY".
Clint plays the opening riff and I started jamming. I know I had a couple of minor fumbles, but I just kept going and I honestly think I did fairly well. I missed my timing on a couple of notes coming out of the guitar solo weird parts. but the drummer nodded approvingly. Afterwards, I could not wait to hand that bass back to Rob and get off the stage. Weird cuz I got nervous after the song was over. But, we got a REALLY big round of applause. Thank you to all of my friends. :laughing-rolling:
Rob stopped me and told me tha the was using his in ear monitors and that I sounded great. He said Dude, I could hear every note you were playing and you sounded great. He acted like he was very pleasantly surprised.
I know I have rambled long enough so in closing I will say this. This is the first time I have ever played anywhere outside of my hoouse or work and teh first time I had ever played with any other musician in any manner. I had never jammed with a drummer or guitar player, I dove in head first and I absolutely loved it. It was kind of intoxicating for me and an aphrodisiac for my wife. :banana-rock:
