I heard the Thiel 3.7 speakers today

Well actually it was on Monday, anyway I wanted to bounce my impressions of anybody else who has heard these. First off the speakers were placed in the room against the long wall, my seat was pretty much right against the opposite wall. They were toed in about 10-15deg. there was some heavy drapes behind them floor to ceiling covering the same size window.

First off being a coaxial speaker I was expecting great things, imaging and soundstage wise. It didn't happen, also the deep bass while not boomy seemed, kind of wooly or thick. The bass did have good impact, I should have listened to their sound with the door to right rear open to see if that cleared things up. Or listened to them in the lobby when he moved them so I could listen to some Magnepan also 3.7's but that is another story.

I might have asked to place the speakers along the short wall but his current cabling in the room would not have reached that far. Plus I was getting tired by then, getting up early that morning to drive to Indy. Otherwise the speakers sounded pretty nice, frequency response seemed good and so were the dynamics.

Considering placement, both speakers and listener, I'm surprised they sounded as good as described.

:text-+1: to what Rope said. The Thiels I've heard, though a different model from what you describe, are the best marketed speakers I've heard.

The fact you were up against the rear wall was the big problem here. If they would have allowed you to move 24 inchs forward and narrow the placement to an equilateral triangle you would have found a much improved sound. The proximity of the wall to the speakers can also add to the muddiness. Pulling them out into the room would reduce the mud further. Creating a Near Field Listening of 2 ft x 2 ft. This would reduce the room acoustics effects due to increased difference for the the direct to radiant fields.
