Well I've dissed John Mayer before, but I reserve the right to change my tune at any time and shit :teasing-neener: so here goes. I'll even devote a new thread to him.

I'm really enjoying his new album, Paradise Valley:

This is really REALLY good stuff, IMHO. I like the songwriting, I like the playing, even the singing. It's relaxed, it's interesting, it's lighthearted but has some real depth, it's catchy, and it's unpretentious (which is a problem I've had with Mayer before). I'm on my fourth listen in a row to the whole album right now, and digging it more each time.

Highly recommended. And thanks to heeman for forcing me to buy this album. :angelic-green:


It's possible I may even go back to some of his previous albums and give them another try. :scared-yipes:

I've long thought that Mayer was an underrated talent.

"Continuum" is his best CD IMO. I have not heard this one yet.

This one's among my favorites by Mayer . . . . .

In his live performances he gets comfortable and opens up on guitar and extends most songs. ~ :twocents-mytwocents:

I have been a fan of his for quite sometime now, currently listening to Battle Studies back and forth to work.

I do have all of his CD's and all have some great tunes.

When I get a new album from anyone, I spend many days listening back and forth to work and sometime in the HT. I did that with this new one, Paradise Valley and at first, wasn't thrilled, didn't hate, but now I am really into it!

His song writing ability and Musicianship is under rated like T7 said.

Where The Light Is, is not, IMHO, a great show. He does show off his talent, however I am not a fan of the mood that the venue portrays. He has had a few shows on Soundstage, that have not been release yet, and may not be, that I have seen that are much, much better.

Anyway, I love his duet with Katty Perry and of course Paper Doll.

Enough Said, I'm a fan!

I like Room For Squares a lot too and I agree Continuum is a great album! I'll have to order this new release.

Okay, I just finished watching this (on DVD) and probably the first time sober!

Bob R you are absolutely right, this does show how diverse and talented John really is. He is a very talented song writer musician and man can he shred and then get down and be funky mellow.

From an Audio Perspective this is fabulous show, I just absolutely hate the large arena venue and they way it was shot. I enjoyed the interview portions and the commentary by him.

Now for some good news (I hope)! This one was filmed in 2007, 6 yrs ago. I have seen some more recent shows of his on AXES TV, however none are out yet that I can find. So let's hope that a new Blu Ray is in the works.

Sometimes I like John Mayer's music. Sometimes I don't.

Continuum and Where The Light Is are both pretty good, I'll agree. B&R has it's moments, too. But I can't help but to shake the feeling that his earlier stuff---at least the big hits---is too embarassing to listen to. Kind of like Hanson's "MMMBop". Not that embarrassment necessarily stops me. That said... I'd probably be fine if I never listened to chick songs like "Daughers" or "YBIAWL" ever again. Though, "Neon" from Room For Squares is kind of cool to hear still.

I think I actually wrote a post back on the old forum wishing that John would go on tour, have trouble with drugs, get his heart broke, get his cheekbone broke, wake up in his own vomit, etc; and then write a fantastic, real-life album. He did have an irritating, early fixation on school...
Still love listening (and watching) him, though. :eusa-clap:

Jury's still out on whether I like this as much as Paradise Valley, but so far so good!
 
^ There are more songs on Born and Raised that I really like, than on Paradise Valley, however both have great musicianship and songwriting.
 
I think I'm on the other side of that fence. I like Born and Raised, but there aren't as many songs on it that really resonate with me, compared to Paradise Valley. But yeah they've both got good stuff.

The last page of Time magazine is always a "10 Questions" with somebody who is Somebody. Last week they interviewed John Mayer. He's actually had a throat inflammation called granuloma for a couple years, causing him to write songs in a lower range starting with Born and Raised. (I didn't know that, and neither did he until recently) He's even had Botox injections into his vocal cords (!) which hopefully will allow his vocal range to extend up to its previous range as it wears off. Pretty interesting.

Maybe he got throat cancer from too much cunnilingus with the ladies?
