Les Miserables

We went to see Les Miserable last night and I was pretty blown away. Les Mis has been my favorite musical for many years. I've heard the soundtrack from the original London cast more times than I can count and was privileged to catch the highly acclaimed International Cast at the Seoul Opera House when we lived in Korea. I had high expectations for the movie and I was not disappointed.

Some have criticized the singing, but I think that is wrong-headed. This is a MOVIE, not a Broadway production and the requirements are different. Movies are more intimate in some respect and acting is a lot more front-and-center than it is in a stage musical. People do not sing perfectly when they are highly emotional or dying. When the camera is in tight on the actor's face, emotional believability is more important than pitch. I found many of the performances powerful, with the clear stand-out being Anne Hathaway's I Dreamed a Dream. If that performance is not worthy of a Best Supporting Actress Oscar, I don't know what is.

That's cool. I look forward to seeing this one; I too have been a fan of the music for a long long time. Hell, I even read the original novel - in French!

I see the New Year is going to revoke some "man cards" right from the get go.

Hey, I've been crying my way through Les Miserable for decades. Nothing new about that. :)

I would also argue that anyone who can make it through Les Mis with a dry eye has something wrong with them.

The arguement can be made that any male who can make it all the way through Les Miserables has something wrong with them.

Les Miserables is nothing less than the story of Redemption put to music and there is nothing girly about that. This ain't Phantom we're talking about here.

I said nothing about the presentation being "girly", however TB (tired butt) is a real concern. Although given the opportunity to stretch ones legs by stepping to an adjacent theater to watch Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is always a welcome distaction. :teasing-neener:

These philistines just don't understand the depth of this story. :snooty: This isn't "chick flick" material.

I know! I am definitely man enough to watch this movie and enjoy it! In fact, I am so manly, I will watch it with a horde of my overweight single girl-friends after shopping for shoes at Nordstrom. In fact, just to prove how manly I really am, I will watch this movie while on my period wearing my Salvatore Farragamo 7" heels in leopard print with my Stella McCartney sun dress and Louis Vuitton scarf. Yes! I am man enough for this movie! I so comfortable in my man-hood I will have sex with any of you to prove it, especially the strong ones who call me ugly and say I am not good enough for true love, the little bitch that I am....

Wait... what just happened there.
