Mega Decks

A new show this season on the DIY Channel. I figured it was what it was, and avoided it. I watched a winter's worth of Yard Crashers and the resulting project (which I posted here) cost as much as a car. Bored tonight, I turned it on...
Well, these "mega decks" are roughly 10x the cost of my little project, and stunning. But I'm still happy when I sit out there and have the sun and breeze on my face.
Good grief, now this one has a retractable grill!

I watched one episode and thought they were way over the top and over done, especially for the properties they were working on.

We are in the process of deciding on a deck, stamped concrete or pavers for our home in WI. Were are still undecided.. :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead:

Retractable grill? Wow, somebody's gone off the edge.

We had our deck removed last year in favor of a patio (exposed aggregate). Best decision ever. I can use my Weber kettle out there without worrying about dropped charcoal and we bought a gas fire pit and some nice furniture (O W Lee for that stuff- not cheap but VERY nice). It's glorious sitting out there on temperate evenings.

We've done a bunch of work on ours as well, and agree, nothing better than relaxing with a cold drink on a warm evening while listening to background music. My only regret is we didn't make it bigger.

We expanded the footprint by about four feet in one direction. Definitely a good decision.

Here's what it looked like once the furniture arrived:

That looks good Akula! We have to have a deck since the slider is 6 feet off the ground, and the wife wanted to go 16 by 20 and I said 12 by 16 is plenty big enough. Add a gas fire pit, waterfall feature, grill, furniture and some plants, and I'm wishing I had listened to my wife.

Our deck was something like 16x16, and now it's 16x20. The extra four feet definitely make a difference. I don't know why that deck ever existed; it didn't go around the house to the sliding glass door (so you'd walk out of the house down to a small patio, then step up onto the deck) and it was only a foot off the ground anyway. As near as I could tell, it existed solely to give the homeowner something to have to stain.

And don't worry, we won't tell your missus you admit she was right. :happy-smileygiantred:

You know women, they always want it bigger. :eusa-whistle:

Akula, when you said "exposed aggregate" I was expecting loose rock, but your pic it looks like it's separated into cemented sections. Details?

It's a type of concrete finish. You pick a more decorative aggregate (since you'll be looking at it). The concrete is poured, and then an acid wash is put onto the surface. The next day they wash that off, exposing the aggregate beneath. It's more expensive than a standard brushed concrete finish, but looks much better and since the surface has ALREADY flaked off (on purpose), it's much harder to damage.
