Having a cable music channel featuring Christmas songs running in the background over the last couple of weeks got me to wondering: which songs do I like the best, and why?
There's hundreds to choose from: not just the songs themselves but the multitude of performances. But after some thought here's the ones that resonate the most with me.
First up is my own live recording of The Skydiggers' performance of Good King Wenceslas at the Black Sheep Inn. A classic song done straight up.

For those of you who, like me, prefer 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall to Twelve Days of Christmas, nothing beats Bob and Doug's version.

The Pogues' Fairytale of New York is... well here's how a pundit summed it up in a column in today's local paper: "an energetic yet elegiac song riven by a love drenched in cigarette smoke, whisky, disappointment, vitriol and hope. Now THAT says Christmas!" I could not agree more.

And finally. I can't help but getting a bit misty every time Bowie and Bing's voices join in perfect harmony to The Little Drummer Boy / Peace On Earth.

Merry Christmas to all.
