Neil Peart way out of his element

Flint

Prodigal Son
Superstar
This is what happens when you put a great drummer in front of a band playing completely out their element. Peart is great, but he doesn't have the native big-bang sensibilities needed to really pull off playing with the Buddy Rich orchestra. And I am not dissing him, very few can pull off being great rock/prog drummers and kill it with big band - I think Steve Smith (famous from Journey) and Omar Hakim are about the only two who really do it well.

Neil's solo is good, but it could be right from a Rush concert.

Not sure what you saw that I didn't, and I of course am not a drummer but it seems like he did ok to me.

The tom to cowbell bit (has kind of an island sound to it I think ) is one of Neil's signature pieces.

Oh, and Steve Smith is a beast. I remember seeing the video for Separate Ways and he did the one handed roll between two toms and when I was at school talking to my buddies about it they all said it couldn't be true. After they saw it all the drummer dudes were on the Steve Smith bandwagon.

Peart was lame on the big band stuff, he didn't "setup" any of the big "punches" at all, and tended to be struggling to even remember the "punches" at all.

I love Peart but he kinda loses me on that. Flint, I'd add Max Weinberg to that short list. I think he's another that could do it well. MW7 album I have is pretty good.

I agree, Max was a great swing jazz drummer to start with and did exactly what was needed for Springsteen.
