I hadn't seen Anthony Bourdain 's show on CNN until today as it was on the TV in the Airport Lounge. After watching it for 20 minutes I've come to the conclusion that dude is one smug bastard. I never seen such posing and self-importance on TV in a long time.

Heh, I was toying with posting about his latest adventure shown tonight, going back to his roots in New Jersey. Suddenly his "personality" matches everyone else he talks to, kinda makes sense.
It's also interesting to me to see local Jersey chefs talk about their specialties, how Tony enjoys it, and how it matches human pride and actions around the world, whether in South Korea, Russia, Thailand, or Iran. That's made a big impression on me.
A couple folks here at AA hate his personality; I think he's improved a lot with age. I also realize I'm a lot more tolerant of "arrogance"; on my barbeque forum most can't stand Myron Mixon, but I think he's a hoot and definitely an expert on smoking.
Different strokes, I guess.

Try being a Jersey boy in rural northwestern PA.

Good times.

LOL, he's a Jersey Boy + he ran several restaurant kitchens as Executive Chef. And if I've ever seen some serious EGO, it's thick on Jersey boys and Chefs!

What I saw was a guy reacting to people in places where we will never get to go. Rather than focusing on the place, the show is about him experiencing the place. Screw that. I don't give a rats ass about him or his experience, I want to learn about the place.

I like his show for exactly that reason. I can "learn" about any place through many ways; with Bourdain I get to experience it.

Plus I think it was Deacon who, at a Bats GTG, once told me I sounded just like Bourdain. A badge of honour!

IMHO, Mr. Bourdain's personality can get a little annoying but I'm with Jeff. I can sometimes do without Tony's political and/or social commentary but in the few episodes I've seen he seems to keep that just below my tolerance threshold.

<bump>

I've just watched the Hanoi/Obama episode for the second time tonight. I really, really would like to visit Vietnam, even though I'm not a fan of humidity. Beautiful scenery, and the food looks incredible (oriental base forcefully shaped by french influences). The minibike/rain way of life is definitely foreign to me, one I'd really like to experience.

President Obama arrived in his usual heavy black sedan, and the streets filled up with locals during the preps, wondering what was going on; the crowd went absolutely nuts when he got out of the car, they were so welcoming (heh). Tony took him into a small noodle shop, and they sat on backless, 18" plastic stools and slurped noodles with the locals. The President seemed to appreciate the informal "night out", and he thumbed his nose at his muslim heritage by consuming fried pork belly . I'd read on CNN a few weeks ago that the Secret Service were very nervous about this little adventure, but it seemed to go off very smoothly.

Really enjoyed this. ;)

its difficult to say his style has changed for the better. this is his third 'morphed' show.

i believe the first was No Reservations, which mightve fit what IG wanted, learning more about the place, and more primarily about food. the place tho becomes secondary, including the people he reacts with and/or explore with. this is where he met the russian besty he has a gazillion times.

second was Layover i think, which is also a bit younger too, about a year or so also under the CNN name. very similar to Parts unknown too.

his earlier shows were much better, and quite frankly, more 'in tune' with what i want to watch.

IG, might want to try hunting for an older show called

Global Trekker

Ian Wright is my favorite host on the show...

and/or The lonely planet.

Padma Lakshmi started on this show ...

Both outstanding shows....
