Pawn Shop Haul

When I switch to noon workouts in an outdoor pool in July and August, it means I then drive past a pawn shop in a hamlet a few times a week that I'd otherwise not see. And once a year I go in and see what they might have. No gear worth writing home about however they had a lot more CDs piled and stacked up than I remember. So I spent two hours and got through about half of it. (I refused to dig down through milk crates stacked four high with discs, sticking instead to a main shelf that was pretty much at shoulder height; much easier on the back!)

Anyhow I gathered a stack of ~30 discs by the time I was done hunting. I took photos of all the CD cases and then headed home where I was able to sort them into three categories: those I either already had in my collection or did not want in my collection (after some research); those that I wanted but which I could borrow from the library (with a collection of ~100,000 CDs); and the ones I would buy (a nice round number of 10).

So it was then back to the shop to retrieve the 10 I wanted from the pile I'd set aside, and my offer of $10 for the lot was accepted.

It's an eclectic mix, which fills a few holes in my collection, and which I'm now sampling as I type:

The Essential Dean Martin
Some Girls Do
- Lee Aaron
Wild Wild West - The Escape Club (had that on cassette only!)
Tapestry Revisited - A Tribute to Carole King (various musicians)
The Decca Years - Sammy Davis, Jr. (I can't believe I had no Sammy in my collection!)
Purge and I Bificus - Bif Naked
Still Waters - The BeeGees
The Andrews Sisters With the Glenn Miller Orchestra - Vol. 1 of the Chesterfield Broadcasts
Roll With It
- Steve Winwood (had that on vinyl only)

Not a bad haul for $10!

Good score Jeff! We have a Salvation Army near us that always has a bunch of cd's for a buck, and constantly adding to their collection.

Cassette?
Not only that: it was most likely recorded from a vinyl copy!

I guess instead of saying I filled some "holes" in my collection, it should have been craters. :)

I put The Escape Club into the same category as Fine Young Cannibals. Kinda don't really like their music, yet didn't always turn the dial when their hit song was on the radio.

Now... Had you picked up some Culture Club, on the other hand... Karma Chameleon is a catchy little tune. Plus, the girl in that band is kinda hot.

Not bad. I've had Still Waters for years... I really like the album, it's one of my favorites.

Thanks for the reminder. I've got the their first three albums on vinyl, and Colour By Numbers on CD as well. Saw them live once when they were touring that album.

The other band of the era that were lots of fun was The Thompson Twins. Also saw them live.

Just finished listening to it. It's been years!

Irresistible Force is still the stand-out song on that album - IMHO. The rest are really good "chill lounge" songs: light pop/soul with a faded soupcon of disco. And I mean all of that in a good way.

I liked Thompson Twins. Good early MTV stuff. Don't know why I haven't managed to get a hits album of theirs. Never hear them on the radio so it'd be worth it.

Hard t0 argue with that, but "Alone" still strikes a chord with me, just because of the place I was in when I first heard it. It's a great song too.

First concert I ever attended was The Thompson Twins with O.M.D. Opening and nobody at the time knew who OMD was but man they were awesome.

Jeff as you know I shop pawn shops all the time and I'd say 80% of my home theaters were bought at Pawn shops.
