Can bass response room acoustic issues be overcome by placing a sub-woofer at or near the listening position?

There will be room interaction wherever you put the sub. That interaction will be different for each location. Placing the sub near-field may avoid nulls and peaks at the listening position. Hsu recommends near-field placement if the listening position is against a wall and the room is over 18' deep.
