This is kinda heavy on me, I played banjo in college and actually performed in a bluegrass band for one summer (although on fiddle, not banjo). I could play Foggy Mountain Breakdown at 9 notes/second, Earl did it at 15 notes/second. My roommate the last two years of college played an Ovation guitar, we both sang, and did all kinds of talent shows and open mic nights. During my last year I had to pawn the banjo to eat, and returned after my senior year to buy it back.
The pawn shop was now a pizza place. I never learned whatever happened to that banjo, and never touched the instrument since. :|

I heard this sad news earlier today and have been spinning my vinyl copy of Flatt & Scruggs' Greatest Hits for the last hour.

Earl's Breakdown is one great banjo song!

Just ordered this off Amazon. Twenty-eight tracks in total (versus eleven on the Greatest Hits copy that I have.)

I saw this earlier. Sad. I have the 2 disc Essentials. I don't have a lot of his stuff, but I do like him.

RIP Mr. Scruggs.

Definitely a LEGEND. I grew up on that kind of stuff. Well, my father listened to it. I didn't like it at the time, but now it is really cool. Great stuff.

The guitar player in that video is jammin the whole time and he is just standing there calm as can be like he ain't doin nothin special.

Its getting real sad...Yesfan, back in the mid 70's I went to Ind a couple of times to see friends & listen to the bluegrass music there. Everytime time I went to Ind........folks were telling me about the "live music" in Tenn. I visited Tenn 2 times to vist a friend there............always missed the live music there.
Scruggs passon will be missed..........the guy loved to play.......
