The top plinth is on rubber isolation mounts. It is to keep vibration from the motor plinth away from the platter plinth and thus separated from the playing surface.

With only a few hours of listening today, I am very happy with this setup. It is very balanced with a nice bottom end and crisp highs. Now my Clearaudio Champion II with the SME 309 and Glider presents music with more detail and finesse, but then I would expect that. Still I really like this Roksan rig. It is also more forgiving of older vinyl.
 
I like the finish and the tone arm on your DIY setup better than the one in the video.

Nice job, wanna make another one for me?? :)
