Expecting a doze-y afternoon watching football, I got distracted by this documentary on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, which I haven't seen before, on Palladia. Missed the first part of it, and it's damn long, but it is GOOD; will have to see if its available on disk.
I'm not a huge fan of what I'd call "standard, garage rock bands", the kind of material that most cover bands do every weekend (including me) but the Heartbreakers were a bit special; Campbell, Tench, Lynch and Epstein weren't at the top of their respective instruments, but they were tasty, and played exactly what the song needed. I'm not a fan of Tom's voice either, but his songwriting is stellar (so many in that club!). And, he's one of the few "big" artists who actually do care about audio fidelity, witness his last two albums coming out on Bluray Audio.
So many chapters to this story; his detours with Dave Stewart and Stevie Nicks, his time with what became the Travelling Wilburys, Lynch's eventual disenchantment and departure, Epstein's descent into heroin, the first bass player's replacement by Howie and his re-hiring when Howie died, the Heartbreakers' gigs as a "backup band" for Dylan and Johnny Cash, etc. What a great history. :eusa-clap:
