Ron Howard did an interview after Monaco. He's definitely been bitten by the F1 bug and he really wants a race in New Jersey. I view this movie with a great deal of trepidation [Insert Jaws music here]. I like Ron Howard movies a lot, but after Frankenheimer's Grand Prix, I don't know where he can go with the story. Maybe he's got an angle or maybe he's an F1 drug addict. It doesn't help that I've been re-reading Lauda's Art and Science of Grand Prix Driving.
Pretty much any decent action movie makes money these days.
I think you're going to need to catch this one quick if you want to see it in a theater.
The Good - the women around F1 and the clothing style of 1976 are spot on. The gratuitous nudity. The other drivers resembled their counterparts fairly well.
The Bad - the cinematography and direction of the racing scenes give you no real sense of being in a F1 race or of the overtaking. I didn't mind the old TV footage, but the track announcer tells too much of the story. The large number historical and technical inaccuracies. I'm not expecting a documentary, but there are simply far to many distortions to overlook.
The Ugly - The storyline is forced and the character development is ham handed.
****Update - actually all of the casting for physical resemblence is quite extraordinary. Here's what really happened. It will save you money and time and may well be the more compelling story:
