Sometimes Pedigree Seems to Make a Difference

Case in point: Wilson Phillips

If you missed their eponymous album over 20 years ago (1990) do yourself a favour and pick up a copy.

The Wilson side of the group are Brian Wilson's girls. John and Michelle Phillips sired the other part. If that's not musical pedigree I don't know what is!

Anyhow as a group the trio released but four studio albums. I recently bought two more: Shadows and Light (1992) and California (2004).

It is the latter which I have just listened to for the first time. What a treat!

I can't believe that I (and likely a lot of people) missed it the first time around.

There's 11 tracks (plus 1 "hidden") - all covers. Highlights (at least for me): "Monday Monday" and "Dance Dance Dance" - for obvious reasons (relating back to the title of this thread.)

For those who've never heard of them... expect to hear some of the most incredible vocal harmonies ever laid down. I'm talking Simon & Garfunkle calibre here folks. IM (most humble)O.

Do yourself a favour, get a copy. (Amazon has new at $7.44; used starting at $2.55 right now). If the price doesn't sell you, how about the album cover!?

Jeff

ps. Guess who provides "guest vocals and piano" on "In My Room?"

Not to mention Chyna Phillips is riddiculous HOT.

Sorry for being so shallow. I will have to try and check them out. The only songs I am familiar with are Hold On and the couple of others they originally had success with.

Schroeder? :teasing-tease:

Seriously though, I completely agree with you about the harmonies. They're so perfect, they're almost too perfect. I picked up a Christmas album this year that had WP doing Silent Night. It could be a top 40 hit in July it's so good. And on the Two Rooms Elton John tribute disc, WP covers Daniel with equal aplomb. Coincidentally, The Beach Boys' cover of Crocodile Rock ain't too shabby either.

The Beach Boys (what's left of them) are writing and recording new music.

I love Wilson Phillips! I have all their albums.

I too must turn in my shallow card. Or break all my Chyna. or something.

Wilson Phillips are expected to have a new album out this April. It is reported that it will consist exclusively of The Beach Boys and The Mamas and the Papas covers!

Having the pedigree? Nice. Getting to take it for a spin? Priceless!

Wonder why it's titled Christmas in Harmony? :)

I'm nominating you for Forum auteur-of-the-month for that one!

Chyna Phillips is smoking, and who can forget her acting in Caddy Shack 2! Somewhere in the recent past, I had California in my hands, I think it might have been at the Salvation Army, and for some reason I did not get it. I kind of kick my self now. I've got to be in a different mood to listen to them, but they can harmonize like few others.

Back in 1990 I was still more or less into Rock. When their songs were played they drew my attention, especially on MTV, not bad Eye Candy either. However, a rock guy would never admit to liking their music.

Well times have changed and have to admit that even though their music is a little bubble gummy, it is fantastic.

Their abiilities to harmonize is just incredible.

I didn't realize this, however Chynna was on episode 13 of Dancing with the Stars.

I will take your advice Mr. Mackwood and pick up some of their stuff.

Kinda off-topic, but talking about both the Beach Boys, and the Mamas and the Papas, made me think of my favorite Beach Boys record:

They just nailed that tune! :bow-blue: :bow-blue: :bow-blue:
