Speaker Repair

Folks,

I have come across an amazing loudspeaker repair operation and want to share it with you.

But first the backstory...

As you know, I collect, have refurbished, and use the vintage (~1977-84) Koss CM line of speakers, and in particular the Koss CM/1030. All of mine have been refurbished here in Ottawa, at SpeakerMart.

I'm also an online source of information to other Koss CM owners, and would-be owners, providing information, advice, etc.

For owners from the US, advising them to use SpeakerMart's services is sometimes not in the cards, because of issues (and costs) involving shipping to Canada etc. So I have been on the lookout, for a few years, for a US-based shop that I felt comfortable sending people to.

A year or so ago, a St. Pete-based friend of mine told me about a Tampa business called The Speaker Exchange, where he had gone to have a pair of CM/1030s done. He subsequently had another pair done. In both cases the price charged and quality of the work were excellent. I then started recommending them to others and the feedback was great as well. And finally, a couple of weeks ago, I had the chance to visit The Speaker Exchange in person, meet with the owner and staff (which includes his wife and daughter), and have them completely refurbish two CM/1030 woofers that I had brought with me. The work was done over my 5 day stay in the area and the workmanship and price were outstanding. During my two visits I got to see a very very impressive operation.

They service all makes and models of speakers, subwoofers included. They have clients from around the world. They service components and whole speakers.

If you ever need to have a speaker, or any of its components, repaired, I encourage you to contact them. Here is the contact information:

Feel free to mention my name if you do. I'll be posting similar messages on a number of forums where I have been posting Koss CM info and will be checking with Glenn once or twice a year to see if anyone has taken me up on my suggestion.

Regards.

Very cool Jeff, glad you had a good experience and I am glad to see there is someone out there still doing a brick and mortar business in this industry. Those are hard to come by these days and finding one that specializes in quality resto work is even better.

Wish I would have used someone like this when my JBL L96's, needed the surrounds redone. I tried a DIY kit, however things went south and the results were pretty Fugly. I sold them soon after that for like $30.

I have an old pair of speakers that I love but shipping them would cost a ton, wish this place was closer. :(

is it just the drivers that need fixing? Can you take those out and just send in those?

Yeah woofer and tweeter in one speaker has rotten surrounds. Does fixing them change the sound sig of the speaker?

Walls,

Glenn is extremely meticulous in preserving the original characteristics of the speaker / driver.

In the case of my two woofers, the cones / coils were replaced mass-balanced to original spec. I know that when he rebuilds crossovers he hand picks and matches every component. And everything he does gets run on the test bench until he's happy with the end result.

There are high-end OEMs from around the world who send work to him.

I suggest you give him a call / email him. I'm sure he'll address all of your concerns.

Jeff
