Fingers crossed... I've got a chance to acquire a pair of Tannoy Berkeleys.

Original owner. No visible issues with the drivers. I had a quick / cursory look at them today and it appears that they've never been re-coned / had the surrounds changed - and would therefore conclude that the crossovers are all-original as well. But the situation is that I won't be able to put them through their paces before I take possession.

Acquiring and refurbishing "vintage" speakers is not new to me - but this would be my first pair of Tannoys.

I've heard their bigger brother (the Arden) quite a number of years ago and was way impressed. Both speakers use the same HPD 385A driver. The only real difference is the Arden's bigger cabinet (and resulting 5Hz lower bass extension.) Sonically they should sound almost identical.

If I do the deal for them in a few days, I'll then decide whether these need a refurb, and whether I plan to keep them or flip them.

Anyone out there have any first-hand experience with these speakers?

Jeff

While I've never heard the Berkeley, I am in love with those class of speakers. I've owned the Churchill speakers and hear several other pro-monitors over the years. I also still believe one of the best large room / mid-field studio monitors ever made was the Tannoy System 15.

If they are working properly, I am certain you will love them.

Haven't heard the Berkeleys either. My audio-mixing station monitors are Tannoy Reveals, with the accompanying subwoofer; I'm perfectly happy with them. :eek:bscene-drinkingcheers:

Unfortunately the seller has decided to keep the Tannoys.

Bit of a bummer; I was keen to try them out in my living room alongside my same-vintage Koss CM/1030's.

ps. On a positive note I just sold Zing's old SVS sub that I picked up from him several weeks back with the intention of flipping or keeping. It was actually tough to let it go after I set it up this morning in my family room HT to demo for the buyer this afternoon.

That is a bummer about the Tannoys but I'm glad we both made out regarding the sub. As much as I loved that thing, I can't say I miss it because I really enjoy its replacement(s).

Yeah, I think it was a win-win-win for you, me, and the buyer. Thing is that it's much tougher (and more expensive) to find used SVS subs up here in Canada, which meant that I could ask more than what I paid you for it, and the buyer still got a great deal. (Of course after I sold it to him, took the cash, and helped him load it into his truck, I had him come downstairs for a demo of my main HT. I think I re-lit his "I want" fuse! Gotta love this hobby and one's ability to corrupt the personal finances of others!)

You Sir, are Evil.
I like that in a guy!
