Weekend Project - Nakamichi 700ZXE

Renaissance man
I fixed this cassette deck for a friend. It is a really great deck, but way over engineered and a PIA to work on.

Well that thing is sexy. What all did you have to do to it?

I never owned any Nakamichi home products and certainly could never have afforded any of their high end tape decks, but I had a Nakamichi head unit in a car stereo I put together one time that was absolutely my favorite head unit of all time.

Nakamichi MB 75

Super clean and would play at full volume without ever clipping (tested on an oscilloscope). I had one other head unit, an Alpine, that never clipped but that was it.

There is a motor and belt that runs the capstan. There is another motor and belt that rotates a cam gear that lifts the heads/pinch rollers transport. The cam gear grease was sticky and the belt was drying out. These didn't allow the head to engage, so no music. It took several hours to take the thing apart, clean the cam gear, add new grease and condition the rubber belt and then put it all back together again. Voila, music!
