Yamaha problem

My fairly old Yamaha receiver I use in the family room seems to be having a problem. I notice when watching tv (analog audio outs to the receiver) there sounds like a lot of distortion. Sometimes turning it up will help make it go away, but lately, tapping the receiver on the top makes it go away.

What do you think? Should I switch to a digital out on the tv box and see if that helps?

The family room is not surround sound, my TV is an older RPTV, so no real need for HDMI or anything.

Could be coroding cables. Try twisting the rca's on there inputs to clean them a little to see if that helps. Second try would be a digital cable.

I've had to apply pot cleaner to the volume on my old Yamaha integrated amp a couple times, it was exhibiting the same thing you're experiencing.

I would. If for no other reason than to help identify the source of the trouble.

If tapping on the chassis cures the problem I'd say that points to a mechanical problem; pots, switches, relays, connection points. If switching to a digital connection doesn't help try taking the cover off and cleaning every mechanical connection with cleaner.

Or ... Use this as an excuse to upgrade and move the receiver out to the garage.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll have to tear it apart and take a look. I would love to use this as an upgrade excuse, but my plan was to move the Rotel from the music room down to replace the Yamaha and go with a pre/pro with additional amps in the music room. But, since I don't have a PJ yet in that room, I was hoping not to do this too soon. I may try to patch the Yammie for now...but we'll see. If not, I can replace it fairly cheaply now, as the family room setup is only 2.0.

Damn, wish I had more money.

I had a similar experience with my Halo A-23. The fix was a loose solder joint.

OK. So, is there a specific chemical I can use to clean the contacts, etc? Maybe Isopropyl alcohol?

You should wrap your cables and connections with Teflon Tape. This will provide you with solid connections and provide superior improvement in sound quality. :handgestures-thumbup:

You're a member of the wrong forum. :teasing-neener:

Yesterday I opened the receiver and took a look. Found nothing notable. Cleaned it all but haven't yet used contact cleaner (I may do that as well). The receiver is about 8 years old, possibly older, as it's an RXV 520. It lacks component inputs.

My current situation is this:
This is for my family room. Family room consists of a 57" RPTV with one HDMI input. TV is approx. 7 years old.
I have two speakers (Klipsch RF3II's), so they are very efficient. Will never have surround sound in family room.
System is used for TV viewing and blu-ray movies (no PJ in theater yet, so this is where 100% of TV is watched).
System is used for music only as background when cooking, cleaning, or having guests over. No critical or serious listening is done here.

Knowing this, and it seems I may be looking at a new receiver, I don't want to put a lot of money into one but future proofing of some sort would be good. I'm thinking I need:

4 HDMI inputs (Cable box/ blu ray player / possible future Roku box / possible future game console for kid).
Power is irrelevant.
Obviously, and surround sound is actually irrelevant, but A/V receivers may be the cheapest way around that...plus, HDMI switching would be nice (I realize there are switches available).
Zone 2 would be nice for future deck speakers.

If a TV upgrade is coming in the future, I'll need to be able to have the current HDMI connections, etc., etc.

So, knowing this, how do these look for replacements?

Is there a cheaper/better alternative that I'm not thinking about? I'd prefer to keep the money down due to the casualness of the system, but at the same time, I would like to have some ease of use and compatibility for future upgrades.

Thanks for any input or suggestions guys.
