As stated previously, not up on latest codecs , speaker placement etc. Are atmos (height) channels a gimmick or something I need to seriously consider while shopping for a new prepro/AVR??

You know both thiings can be true right?!

I can say having just recently gone the atmos route (5.4.2 from 7.1) that there is a difference that makes a difference. Its more enveloping and immersive. You get more of the "I'm in the middle of the action" type feel than with only a single layer of sound. It's a gimmick but its also something that needs to be considered.

That makes perfect sense. Need to look at Dolby page. I assume then that the surrounds need to come down in height? Mine are currently a couple feet above the listening position.
I have a drop ceiling so I suppose it would be easy enough to install in ceiling speakers for the height/atmos element.
So just to I have my terminology correct, you have 5 surrounds, 4 atmos and 2 subs. So you went from 7 channels amplified to 9. Does that mean that you had to buy a new avr/ prepro?

Well the reason why I went Atmos was because I got a new AVR. Actually let me back up.

It all started when I got the new display (77' LG C4) and with the new display I immediately had problems with connections etc. with my old AVR (Yamaha RX-V679). Since the AVR was so old (2014) I just decided to update that. Figured I would enter the modern world and get something that could do all the latest codecs etc. so I ended up getting a Denon 3800. Added the front height spkrs and converted the rears to height and now I have 5 surrounds, 4 height speakers, and 2 subs.

Oh and since I couldn't hook up anything with analog video to the Denon I had to get a BD player.
