What Are You Listening To?

Max Cooper.jpg

Max Cooper, 3D Reworks 001

This is an electronic music EP, done in a "binaural" recording.
From what I remember, a "binaural" recording is normally a live music performance (usually classical) that is recorded with two small mics inside a styrofoam head, and what those two mics hear in the auditorium (the musicians, the reflections and reverbs in the hall, the old lady who keeps clearing her throat four rows behind you, etc) are exactly what goes into your two earcups or IEMs, so you hear exactly what you would have heard had you (or at least your head) been there in the hall.
Now, how does this work with electronic music? I'm not really sure; my guess is that the final stereo track was just mixed/mastered on headphones, rather than speakers. It's quite an experience, I'm streaming it right now from Apple Music. Worth a listen if you like listening thru cans.

If you claim to be a power-pop lover and haven't heard of Bleu (aka: Bleu McCauley), then you are missing out.

Stunning slushpump solos by the US Army Band, on Flight of the Bumblebee! I played trombone from gradeschool thru college jazz band, and this guy's skill is stunning!

Someone gave me a gift of a box set of 7 180 gram vinyl records of Garth Brooks. Never heard of him till i got the gift. I believe he is very famous there. I tried to listen but sad to say I don't seem to get his music. Maybe it will grow on me I hope. The box set looks expensive.

Matt Johnson is the keyboardist for one of my favorite Brit-funk bands, Jamiroquoi. During the Pandemic he started doing a lot of ewetubes from home, demos of certain instruments, funk techniques, mixing tricks, etc and I really enjoyed watching them. Think he's "working" a lot more now so he doesn't publish much, but he dropped this 2-minute nugget of funk today, playing along with Dua Lipa (I'm not familiar with her stuff, so don't know if he's playing along with the record, or just a vox track, or what).

Goose, Everything Must Go.

Kinda like Umphrey's McGee, but with thicker vocals and MUCH heavier percussion. Really enjoying them.

I love Hiromi! I haven't seen/heard this clip before, Canon in D (Pachlebell? I don't know; Pauly?) She throws a metal ruler into the piano for effects, and (from the comments at least) this was an improvised piece for which someone else transcribed, which is fun to follow along with.
And it was uber-amazing the way she added a half-beat to stay in time with the audience, obviously a bunch of white people ;). Saw a video of, damn can't remember his name right now, where the audience started clapping along on 1 and 3, he got the rest of the band to drop out for 8 bars or so, and added an extra beat to get the audience on 2 and 4, and you could see the band members crack up!

Yes, Pachelbel. My wife forwarded me this video earlier, yeah she's pretty amazing. Starts off very simple but gets wild at the end. Fun!
