Advice Needed on Computer Speakers

I need to find a decent pair of speakers for use with the family computer that do not require a subwoofer. I am thinking about using a small pair of active monitors, but I am not married to that. I definitely want to keep the wiring requirements down to a minimum. Does anyone have any suggestions? I want something that sounds good, but it does not have to be reference quality. I do not want to spend more than a couple hundred dollars and I can't use anything huge.

Audioengine A2+ sell for $250 at lots of places includes. It has the usual headphone input but also RCA ins and built-in USB DAC. The non-plus model, A2 sells for $200 and is identical except for the USB DAC.

im very satisfied with it, and can serve different purposes. recently bought it for work, but a couple of other colleagues are getting their own too...

its the size of a brick, weighs about the same too. imo, works best with the drivers facing directly at the crowd or audience. but sound dispersion is definitely great.

I got my M-Audio monitors for $99 on sale at best buy. They have all the comps of the audioengine without the price. I have to guess the audioengines are superior based on the number of positive reviews they get. I have never heard anything bad about the audioengines.

That being said the M Audios I bought are really nice. I am super happy with them.

I have no place to put a subwoofer in this setup. I don't want it on the desk and there is no room under the desk either. That's why I cannot use the speakers I already have.

Haywood, if ever, you can consider using the one i mentioned or the bose soundlink mini. the only problem is (and of course, this is based on everyones preference and/or usage) is that the bose mini needs a proprietary connection to charge it. i chose the creative soundblaster roar for this particular reason.

my sister owns the mini, and man, the sound on it, definitely not what i expected. altho i wanted one, i went with the creative roar to meet my needs. both definitely will do what you want with minimal space.

So, I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I have a pair of Creative speakers at my office that I think sound pretty decent for the minimal amount we paid for them -- which I think was ~$20. I think they do just fine for when I'm at work.

None of these is going to break the bank, they're all designed for 2.0 playback and they'll give you a pretty decent sound without much clutter.

Now, would I want the M-Audios -- absolutely. But I'm too cheap to spend that kind of dough on my computer speakers.

another big Auodioengine A2 fan here. $200 and a very, very nice sound. been using for about 4 years now and have never been tempted to look for anything else for my desktop, and that's really saying something. read up on them. if you have a nice sound card with a 3.5mm out then you don't need the 2+ version (i don't).

I ended up scoring a pair of these on Woot for $36 shipped with tax:

They don't have much bass, but sound decent otherwise. I'm pretty happy for what I spent on them.
