ASTM C423

PRETTY HAPPY.........

Roxul; Safe n Sound has a better absorption below 500Hz, rating compared to OC 703 based on ASTM C423 Test Data.

The Roxul is 3" thick vs. the OC 703 at 2", however the cost savings is almost a factor of 3X.

The Roxul is approx $4/panel

The OC 703 is approx $11.50/Panel

Freq: 125 250 500 1000 2000 4000 NRC
Roxul .52 .96 1.18 1.07 1.05 1.05 1.08

Roxul, which is mineral wool, is much more delicate than the fiberglass. It has a better rating, but the reliability is much lower if you are using it in an application where it can be directly touched or handled. So, if you are wrapping it in fabric and mounting it to a wall, it will disintegrate where it gets touched. However, fiberglass won't do that so easily. However, if you are putting the Roxul behind a panel or somewhere it won't get touched, it is more absorbent.

For me, if I were planning a project today, I would be looking closely at Cotton based solutions like Eco Core. I put the data in below.

Not sure where you got the data, but my research shows different numbers:

Freq: 125 250 500 1000 2000 4000 NRC
3" Roxul .63 .95 1.14 1.01 1.03 1.04 1.05
2" OC 703 .17 .86 1.14 1.07 1.02 0.98 1.00
2" OC 705 .16 .71 1.02 1.01 0.99 0.99 0.95
2" EcoCore.39 .51 1.18 1.11 1.06 1.09

If placing the insulation in a wall, or on top of a ceiling cloud or ceiling tiles, the Roxul would be great.

^ That's the plan.

I will utilize my 2" OC 703 absorption panels that I made in Texas at the first reflection points, I may try to integrate them into the wall.

I will also use my 6" OC 703 bass traps in the corners and build others if necessary...........

Construction should begin in a couple of weeks!

Just FYI, Heeman, the panels in my theater were mineral wool. In my HT build thread, which I believe is on this forum somewhere (And So It Begins) I have pics of the construction. IIRC I used a small wire mesh (chicken wire?) between the cloth and the mineral wool to protect it since it is easier to damage it.

I didn't look at the link for the denim material but did consider a denim product as an insulation option when I built my room. I ultimately chose another route for that based solely on cost. The denim product sample I had would need some structure on all sides to keep its shape, though. It's not a "sheet" like OC70x or the mineral wool; it's more "clumpy" which is fine in walls or an attic but would need a little thought in a frame on a wall.

Awesome Chuck...........has demolition/construction started yet?? Maybe I missed the thread?

Since we have angled the side walls, the front bass traps will have 2" OC703 with countless inches (18-24") of the Roxul Comfort Bat behind it. All 4 bass traps will have different shapes/depths behind the fabric corners.

Nah, you didn't miss anything; I've been too lazy to document the progress. Demo is done, framing has started, nothing really interesting yet...
