I was gonna post in the "listening to" thread, but I think this deserves its own.
Just got Beth's new album, Bang Bang Boom Boom.
This is a really good one. Great singing, and I had no idea Beth played the piano too, she does a lot of playing on this album. The music is interesting, and there's a huge variety - from blues to church/gospel to ballads to big band/swing, some serious some humorous. And yet the album as a whole holds together very well.
I admit I'm not that familiar with her solo work; I only "discovered" her through her album with J.B. (Don't Explain); yes Joe guests on one track on this one. I do have one other solo album of Beth's - Leave the Light On - which I've only listened to once as I just got these recently; my initial impression is that it's good but not a the level of BBBB (what a great acronym!).
If you're a fan of Beth's, definitely get this one. I also REALLY appreciated the extensive liner notes in this album. There's a long section about the making of the album and where Beth is personally and professionally, very interesting look at the "inside" of her music. Also a song-by-song commentary. While I understand that in some sense the music should speak for itself, I find I get a lot more out of the experience with this sort of glimpse into the artist's intentions for the music.
