BLUEGRASS music

I've always thoroughly enjoyed/liked bluegrass music, but am familiar with only a few bands.

Earlier today I was introduced to a Nashville band called 'The Steeldrivers'; a five-piece band consisting of a banjo, mandolin, upright bass, fiddle, and guitar.
I liked 'em so much I ordered three of their cds without hesitation. ~ Good stuff!

Any other band/album recommendations and/or information welcome.

I played in a bluegrass band one summer during college, it's cool when everyone in the band can hear and sing a harmony! :handgestures-thumbup:

A couple bands I listened to a lot then: The Seldom Scene, The Rocky Mountain Oysters, Sam Bush's band whose name escapes me right now, and anything by Master Multi-Instrumentalist Mark O'Connor. :bow-blue: :bow-blue: :bow-blue: (he's played a bunch of different styles of music over the years, however, check first).

There was also a band in Iowa that was a lot of fun when I attended ISU; they were called Beer Belly Billie and the Froggy Mountain Toadstompers. They played all the classic standards but always changed the lyrics, usually toward the obscene.

Let me tell you all the story 'bout a man named Jed,
Who grabbed his wife and threw her on the bed….
 :handgestures-thumbup:

EDIT: Bush's band was New Grass Revival. It also reminded me, if you wanna hear a kickass bluegrass vocalist, check out John Cowan! Alyson Krauss too, of course.

BlueGrass has always been a passion of mine. Del McCoury is one my fav bads and this is my favorite song of his.

Nice. I'm gonna have to look up some of these.

National Treasure right there.

I have a "mandolin instruction video" by the McCourey brothers!

I have to agree with Botch about New Grass Revival. John Cowan has a hell of a voice. Even though I'm born and bred in bluegrass country, there's still a lot of it out there that's new to me. I would say some good first time starters would be these two albums if you don't already have them.

This is a good live concert of the tracks above. It was released shortly after John Hartford died (this was his last performance, I believe). There's a DVD version out too (I need to get that!)

Another I have and liked is:

I also have a couple of live shows I got back in my disc trading days. One show is from Bill Monroe in 1954. The quality is pretty good too.

I also have to mention Ricky Skaggs. Not mentioning him when talking about bluegrass would be like, talking about reggae and not mentioning Marley. As with any new genre or artist, I usually go for a couple of 'best ofs' and work from there.

hjomer and Jethro my dad loved these guys. The parodied but they were good musicians

Jethro Live at Adler House long but well worth a listen. He was a showman 65 there and still fast.

Excellent thread Topper!

And great move choosing The Steeldrivers to start it off.

I first learned about them while watching Adele's Live at the Royal Albert Hall Blu-ray, during which she praised the band and went on to do a great cover of their If It Hadn't Been For Love.

Like you, I snapped up all three of their CDs.

Jeff

May have to give that band a listen. I need to expand my bluegrass collection anyway.

Thank you all for the responses ~~ :eek:bscene-drinkingcheers:

This will keep me busy for awhile . . . .
It's time I put together a nice selection of this music to choose from

** Among the few I do have right now is the soundtrack from "O Brother, Where Art Thou" ~~ :handgestures-thumbup:

An additional suggestion: anything with Steve Martin playing banjo!

All known examples (which I happen to have in my collection):

The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo (2009)

Rare Bird Alert (2011) - with the Steep Canyon Rangers

Love Has Come For You (2013) - with Edie Brickell.

I missed him when he passed through Ottawa on tour, but I hear he puts on a great live show.

Jeff
