Canadian '70s Prog Rock Group Garfield

In the Fall of '78 I arrived at Carleton University for my first year of studies. I settled in to my res floor and soon learned two things about most of my fellow floors mates: they were really into listening to music, and they liked doing it high.

A floor favourite was the group Garfield. By that time they had released two albums: Strange Streets (1976) and Out There Tonight (1977). I made a cassette from a copy of the latter. Later in the year they were booked into and played the residence lounge, a pretty large venue (which suited the band - since they toured with a ton of gear), at which I was by then bouncing.

To say that their music was great would be an understatement. Take the best of anything prog rock had to offer and they had it in spades.

As sometimes happens, I had long ago pretty much forgotten about Garfield. The cassette hasn't been played in over three decades. But for reasons unknown, and with some spare time to surf today, the group came to mind, and I discovered something truly neat: back in 2007, a remastered CD containing both of those two albums was released. Even neater: I was able to order a brand new copy from Amazon.uk for $32Cdn all in - with delivery expected within a couple of weeks.

In the meantime I came across a YouTube video containing the whole of Out There Tonight ripped from a pretty good vinyl copy. I've been listening to it this evening and man does it bring back great memories. Here it is. Hope you enjoy it even a fraction as much as I do.

The CD arrived in today's mail and I've listened to it once through in my family room HT and am now giving it a spin in the main HT. It's amazing to hear it for the first time without ticks, pops, and (cassette) tape hiss! Fine remastering of two grand, but almost-never-heard-of, albums.

Will have to listen to some after the news, thanks!

Got me to thinking about some prog in my vinyl collection that I haven't listened to in awhile:
Focus, Stuff, Bloodrock, Spock's Beard, Lake, etc.
There's another, whose 3 albums I absolutely loved and came out on a double CD: Chase! Killer fusion band (heavy on the rock side) with four screaming lead trumpets! The leader, Bill Chase, got his start in Stan Kenton's big band and absolutely blew away anything Maynard Ferguson could do. Most of the band died in a plane crash. Recordings aren't that good even on CD, but damn that was some killer music. :music-rockout:

Regarding Chase: I somewhat recently bought that double CD based largely, I believe, on another one of your posts somewhere. Love it!

Regarding Lake: you just cost me more money. I have Lake and Lake II on vinyl but did not know they were released on CD (my bad for not really looking!) Just found and ordered a digitally remastered set of both of them on CD, plus Paradise Island, from Amazon.ca for $19.69 CDN delivered.

Damn you Botch! (And thanks.)

Jeff

ps. Can I recommend that you purchase the collected works of Focus on CD? I own it. You should as well. :)

Lake and Focus I have on vinyl, probably won't be getting them on CD (especially not now, just bought about six discs this week already).

The Lake CD set arrived today and I made time to listen to Lake from start to finish. Much much better on CD than I remember it on vinyl! :)

Indeed you do Herr Keith!

Jeff

ps. (Lake was a German band, hence the "Herr" appellation - but I suspect you knew that.)
