In the Fall of '78 I arrived at Carleton University for my first year of studies. I settled in to my res floor and soon learned two things about most of my fellow floors mates: they were really into listening to music, and they liked doing it high.
A floor favourite was the group Garfield. By that time they had released two albums: Strange Streets (1976) and Out There Tonight (1977). I made a cassette from a copy of the latter. Later in the year they were booked into and played the residence lounge, a pretty large venue (which suited the band - since they toured with a ton of gear), at which I was by then bouncing.
To say that their music was great would be an understatement. Take the best of anything prog rock had to offer and they had it in spades.
As sometimes happens, I had long ago pretty much forgotten about Garfield. The cassette hasn't been played in over three decades. But for reasons unknown, and with some spare time to surf today, the group came to mind, and I discovered something truly neat: back in 2007, a remastered CD containing both of those two albums was released. Even neater: I was able to order a brand new copy from Amazon.uk for $32Cdn all in - with delivery expected within a couple of weeks.
In the meantime I came across a YouTube video containing the whole of Out There Tonight ripped from a pretty good vinyl copy. I've been listening to it this evening and man does it bring back great memories. Here it is. Hope you enjoy it even a fraction as much as I do.
