Dish channel numbers

I'm confused, there seem to be two of each channel in the triple digits if there is an HD option. There also seems to be a repeat of the channels in 4 digit numbers.

Is it me or is it confusing how they line them up?

If you're new to Dish, you should be just fine buy always using the 3 digit numbers. I believe the 4 digit ones are still there because when they first went HD, that's the way they did them and they don't want to confuse those of us who used those from the start.

Yep. That's a lot of wasted bandwidth. Maybe if they would clean it up, send everyone an updated channel guide and get rid of ALL the SD channels, our bills would drop in price instead of going up. :angry-banghead:

For those HD channels that have a 3 digit and a 4 digit channel, those channel numbers are just aliases to the same stream so they're really not wasting bandwidth. If you haven't found it already, there's a menu setting to not show SD channels if there's a corresponding HD channel. So instead of seeing channel 105 twice, for example, you'd only see the HD version of it. I also suggest taking the time to set up a Favorites list to get rid of all the junk channels...

EDIT:
Here's how to hide the SD channels. I grabbed these instructions from another website and I'm pretty sure they're correct:
Press MENU, select SYSTEM SETUP, and then LOCAL CHANNELS
Select CHANNEL DISPLAY
Select HD PRIORITY
Select ENABLE
Select DONE

I definitely remember the LOCAL CHANNELS part and how stupid that was since the fuctionality has absolutely nothing to do with local channels...

The first rule of subscriptions... PRICES NEVER, EVER GO DOWN!!!

if they cleaned it all up and only offered HD channels, they would call that a major feature upgrade and then raise your rates.

Ok, someone explain the XXX-XX channels.

If I hide SD I lose most of my programming. I have the lowest, or next to, package. Which begs the question, shouldn't HD be the standard now?

XXX-XX are your local channels. You'll find that some of them have multiple feeds. Here in KC, 009-01 is ABC and 009-02 is the local weather. PBS has 3 or 4 different feeds.

Check to see if Free HD for Life would work for you...

My post about there being a setting to hide SD channels is incorrect. Sorry. The setting that I mentioned forces it to go to the HD channel if one exists. In other words if you type in the channel 105, it'll go to the HD channel instead of the SD.

True. I should have thought of that instead of me spewing that last post out.

I am going to try that suggestion about having the HD channels as primary. That I did not know. Thanks Cmonster. Probably wouldn't hurt for me to go ahead and do online payments to get the HD for Life (forgot about that).

One more tip... When modifying a Favorites list, instead of scrolling down through a ton of crap channels you can enter a channel number, like 400, and the list will jump down to that channel. Saved me a ton of time once I learned this.

Mines already set to default to HD. But these channels are dumb. Just give 1 through 120, because that's what I have.

And while they are at it, get rid of stupid shit like HSN, QVC, and other home shopping networks. With the internet and all, who the fuck wants to sit in front of a TV and "wait" for an item to buy?

That's like turning it to the TV Guide channel (another waste) and waiting on a favorite channel to scroll up to see what's on. :angry-banghead:

Some of those home exercise equipment commercials are damn near soft porn.
Or so I've read... :eusa-whistle:
