Cool! Bats, you watchin'? Your turn is coming up soon.

Ed Schawnessey and Buddy Rich did so much to bring modern drumming into the spotlight it just isn't funny. If they were the beginning then Danney Carey has to be the most current evolution of drummers. In my opinion no one is better than him right now. The first one builds and builds but really shifts gears at @2:10. The cool thing is that he seems to endlessly building this into something bigger and bigger.

Edit: Ok What Did I do wrong?

FIXED.

For future reference, all you need is the url to the youtube video. Just paste that and not the "embed" code.

Thanks for posting that Maximo, I've not heard of Danney Carey. What band is that?

Mike Portnoy, of Dream Theater:

Tool.

I've been preaching Danny Carey for awhile......as well as the Tool.

Heavy music, but incredibly complex and beautiful rhythms.

Thanks! Tool is quite popular on my musician websites, I haven't checked them out yet; will do so!

I really like the stuff that's more complex, based on unusual beats and/or polyrhythmic, as opposed to just fast. Here's a couple just from a simple youtube search, as I'm not at all familiar with drummers in general... maybe others have suggestions?

... and this one I thought was particularly cool, very clean and very interesting:

One of my favorite drummers is actually Stewart Copeland, of the Police. His drumming goes SO far out of the box, and it would take an incredible band of musicians to keep the pulse going.
Which, of course, the Police could do in spades. ;)

I'm still waiting for Flint to come on and point out that both Portnoy and Carrey use an incorrect stick grip on their left hands... :D

I disagree. I hate Steve Smith's left hand grip style. But that's me.

As for the polyphonic stuff, I don;t care for it. It seems to me that he is doing it just because he can. It never had a cool rythem or anything you could lock onto just a lot of flash and dash. Steve Smith on the other hand is a musical genious. That was cool.

Ron Bushy, Iron Butterfly - In A Gadda Da Vita

Keep in mind, this solo was performed long before most on this forum were born, and the reason Iron Butterfly is considered the father of metal rock. Ron Bushy's solo starts around 6:25.

That Steve Smith piece is just about as SICK as anything I have seen.

From the Bio on his website:

Smith’s explosive solos and intricate timekeeping served to gain him much acclaim from sources such as Modern Drummer magazine, whose readers voted him the #1 All-Around Drummer five years in a row. In 2001, Modern Drummer magazine named Steve as one of the "Top 25 Drummer of All Time", in 2002 he was voted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame and in 2003 his Hudson Music DVD "Steve Smith Drumset Technique - History of the U.S. Beat" was voted #1 Educational DVD of 2003. The 2008 and 2009 Drum! magazine readers poll voted Smith #1 Jazz Drummer and in 2009 Drum! readers voted "Steve Smith Drum Legacy - Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants" the #1 educational DVD.

WOW!! :text-bravo:

Yeah, I'm actually seriously thinking about getting his Standing on the Shoulders of Giants DVD, would be a cool way to gain some insight into drum technique and history (in a jazz context).

Steve Smith was the drummer for Journey.

There are dozens of acceptable stick grips, most suited for a particular style of drumming. The key to all of them is comfort, ease, and absolute stick control. What is most comfortable for most beginners is usually the worst grip, hence the need for training.

Keith Moon, Stewart Copeland, Mike Portnoy, Steve Gadd, Barrimore Barlow, Nick D'Virgilio, Terry Bozzio, Chad Wakerman, Omar Hakim, are all amazing drummers in addition to all listed above.

This was posted on one of my musician's forums. At first the clave player (clavist?) sounded off, but he isn't. Incredible!

Wow that's cool, I love that sort of stuff. So was there any breakdown of what sort of rhythms/meters they're using? I couldn't even begin to analyze that. Not sure you can even put that into "classical" time signature?

I was thinking the exact same thing. As soon as I started listening I thought what the heck time signature are they playing at.

Thanks Flint, cuz i was lost.

I just realized Mike Mangini wasn't included in the lists.

Check out his one hand closed stroke roll!
