EMOTIVA - UMC-2007.1

I was on the seemingly never-ending waiting list for the The UMC-1 (the UMC-200's predecessor). When it finally shipped it was riduclously buggy and painfully complicated to udate the firmware on. When Emotiva finally called to tell me that my unit was ready I didn't hesitate to pass. Since that time the UMC-1 has been received numerous firmware updates and is supposedly "relatively" stable now. The UMC-200 is supposed to address most of the bugs with the UMC-1. That said the update process is the same for the 200 as the 1 (you have to connect a laptop connected via USB and run an istall progrogram). The "previews" I've read for the 200make it appear that most of the quirks have been addressed. Still... I'm not sure I trust Emotiva enough to buy a UMC-200 to be the centerpoint of my HT.

Let me ammend that... If I were a patient man (which I am not) and didn't mind re-connecting and old receiver in case the UMC-200 goes buggy (which I would) than I'd give it a shot based on specs. It's certainly a bargain but you may need to be prepared to deal with a few quirks.

Like remote control codes. Look in the manual for your universal remote. Chances are the Emotiva isn't listed. That means you'll need to "teach" your univeral remote the common codes.

I stumbled across this sale and looked at their website. Doesn't seem to be a mature electronics company.

I am not currently shopping for a pre/pro, however someone else on here maybe, so I figured I would post....

I don't think "we" are it's target group. :eusa-whistle:

To the contrary, I think "we" are exactly the audience that Emotiva wants; enthusiasts who appreciate quality and value. From what Ive read they excel at customer service. My reservation is that UMC platform, specifically the UMC-1, requires a lite more enthusiasm and patience than I'm willing to invest. Frankly I'm surprised they don't get more run here.

Exactly! I am a set it and forget it kind of guy and from what I've read, lots of people have had the same "problems" that you've had. So...... Us ol'timers (heeman and me, not necessarily you) don't usually have the patience for that kind of stuff!

But yes, the younger "Audiophile" crowd is their target audience, such as Zing and Pauly, et al!

Tweeking and Adjusting are just fine with me if it is SUPPOSED to be part of the process. However, if equipment is quirky due to poor performance, then I am that old cranky guy just like Dennie.

BTW, I spent almost 3 hours with the VIDEO Portion of Disney WOW Calibration Disc last Friday night and did not get pissed off once.......... :happy-smileygiantred:

Yeah... The UMC may not be for you. I have no idea how often it happens but the most commonly reported issues with the UMC-200 seem to be with the Emo-Q room correction system not working correctly or at all. I wouldnt mind jacking with EQ tweaking for hours but not having to do so because the system can't recognize my speakers or their locations.

Other issues I've read about had to do with audio glitches when changing sources or using features like FFWD with a DVR.

I know it sounds like I'm dissing Emotiva but I'm not.

Not at all! Emotiva gets plenty of great reviews and people seem to be very happy with their gear, although "Buggy" is a word associated with the brand. So far!

Not something us old times have time for! LOL

Good for you Heeman, a couple hours is usually okay, as long as it dosen't get BUGGY!!! :angry-tappingfoot:

Ya'll are "old-timers".....I find that not very funny. :eek:bscene-birdiedoublered:

I know someone with an Emotiva amp and actually I think his theater sounds really great. But he uses an old ONYO receiver for the brains.
