External Hard Drive for xbox 360?

So I got my 360 in today and I realized I have an external usb hard drive. Can I hook that up to the xbox for additional storage? I have stuff on there I don't want to erase, infact it has a lot of my music on it. So I would want to hook it up anyway for access to that music. But would it also let me use it like M$ wants me to?
 
I believe the 360 can only read usb drives with up to 16 GB capacity. Take your hard drive out of its casing and put it inside the xbox.
